Zoe Saldana Reveals That Her Gender Fluid Oscar Uses They/Them Pronouns
Saldana received her first Academy Award this year for her performance in ‘Emilia Perez’, and she playfully described her trophy as “gender fluid.”
The actress won the Best Supporting Actress award for her portrayal of Rita, a lawyer assisting a cartel leader in a gender transition within the Spanish-language musical crime drama. This significant role appears to have influenced the way she views her award.
During the Los Angeles premiere of her new movie ‘Elio’ on June 10, Saldana was asked about her Oscar. Her response was both heartfelt and whimsical. “We have it in my office, and my Oscar is gender fluid,” she shared with ‘People’ magazine, adding that the golden statuette identifies as trans and prefers “they/them” pronouns.
Saldana’s perspective has ignited discussions about identity and inclusivity—subjects she is passionate about. Her role in ‘Emilia Perez’ aligns closely with these themes, as the film explores a gender-affirming journey against a backdrop of cartel violence.
In addition to her more serious projects, Saldana is venturing into family-oriented cinema with ‘Elio’, a Pixar and Disney animated film. The story follows a young boy, Elio, who is fascinated with space and embarks on an unexpected intergalactic adventure.
Saldana plays Olga Solis, a role that has earned her significant “cool mom” points at home. Reflecting on her motivation for participating in projects like ‘Elio’, she noted in an interview with ‘Good Morning America’ that her priorities have changed since becoming a parent. “Since becoming a parent, I’ve been interested in incorporating my art into genres that cater to children,” she explained, adding with a smile that her 8-year-old is especially excited for the release of ‘Elio’.
