WTC Final: Lyon Advocates for Aussie Experience While Anticipating a Challenging Showdown with South Africa

Veteran Australian spinner Nathan Lyon has urged caution as the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) Final approaches, set to begin on June 11 at Lord’s. He warned that despite Australia being the defending champions and favourites, South Africa’s formidable batting lineup represents a significant challenge.

Lyon recognized that the experience gained from competing in high-stakes finals, including the previous WTC Final, could benefit Australia. However, he emphasized that such experience may not hold much weight in a single high-pressure match against a team that finished atop the WTC table.

“The experience from players who have won multiple (50-over) World Cups, T20 World Cups, and the World Test Championship final a few years ago is certainly advantageous. However, it doesn’t guarantee success in a one-off game,” Lyon stated during Australia’s training in Beckenham, as reported by the ICC.

Lyon pointed out South Africa’s rich talent pool. “They have world-class batsmen as well as exceptional bowlers, making this a promising contest,” he remarked. “Playing in unfamiliar conditions with the Dukes ball will pose a unique challenge, and it will be thrilling to see the two best bowling attacks face off against each other.”

Prominent players for South Africa include opener Ryan Rickelton, who recently scored a double century (259) in his latest red-ball match. Captain Temba Bavuma and middle-order batsman David Bedingham also shone during the WTC cycle, each accumulating over 600 runs.

“As a cricket enthusiast, I’ve kept an eye on their performances, including their current game against Zimbabwe,” Lyon said. “South Africa boasts standout players like Aiden Markram and Rickelton at the top of the order. There’s no denying their quality. I faced Bedingham last year in county cricket, and he’s a remarkable talent,” he added.

Lyon further emphasized that mastering the fundamentals and managing pressure will be crucial in such a pivotal match. Though he hasn’t played since the Test series in Sri Lanka in February, the 36-year-old confirmed he’s fit and ready for action.

“After Sri Lanka, I took some time to recover my hip, and now I’m fully fit. I’ve been training consistently since then, and for the past five to six weeks, I’ve been bowling regularly,” he noted. “My physical metrics and skill levels are right where I want them to be, and the ball is coming off my hand as intended.”

Mumbai: Former Chennai Super Kings player Suresh Raina has opposed the Impact Player rule in the IPL.

Raina said the rule gives batters an extra advantage and puts more pressure on bowlers. He noted that teams are now scoring 200-plus runs more frequently, with some even approaching the 300-run mark.

“Bowlers have nothing left,” Raina said, adding that the rule has made their job much harder.

Former Mumbai Indians captain Rohit Sharma and several other players have also criticised the rule.

The Impact Player rule allows teams to replace one player during a match with a batter or bowler, depending on the situation. The rule was first tested in the 2022-23 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy before being introduced in the IPL in 2023.
