Just under four months after returning from maternity leave, Belinda Bencic etched her name in history by clinching the singles title at the Abu Dhabi Open, becoming the first mother to win a WTA singles title since 2023. In a hard-fought showdown, Bencic triumphed over Ashlyn Krueger with a comeback victory of 4-6, 6-1, 6-1, securing her the WTA 500 title this past Saturday.

Bencic, a former World No. 4 and gold medalist at the Tokyo Olympics, achieved this remarkable feat in a match that lasted 2 hours and 23 minutes, marking her fourth tour-level event since welcoming her daughter Bella in April 2024.

This victory makes Bencic the first mother to secure a WTA singles title since Elina Svitolina claimed the trophy in Strasbourg in May 2023. “There were obviously a lot of emotions,” Bencic reflected after her win. “It was a challenging final; I felt like I had to shift into a higher gear during the second and third sets. Seeing Bella there in the third set was a truly special moment.”

This win marks Bencic’s ninth career WTA singles title and her first title since winning the same tournament in Abu Dhabi in 2023. Remarkably, she remains undefeated at the Abu Dhabi event, with a perfect 9-0 record. Bencic’s impressive return to peak form came quickly. After her comeback in October 2024, she participated in a WTA 125 event, an ITF Challenger, and the Billie Jean King Cup Playoffs before beginning her WTA-level comeback at the United Cup in the first week of this season.

The Swiss star has swiftly accumulated victories on tour, including reaching the Round of 16 at the Australian Open — her first Grand Slam since the 2023 US Open. Following her successful outing in Abu Dhabi, Bencic boasts a 10-3 record at the tour-level this year. Currently ranked No. 157, she is the third-lowest-ranked player to win a WTA 500 title since the inception of this tournament tier, preceded only by Alexandra Dulgheru (No. 201 in 2009 Warsaw) and Serena Williams (No. 169 in 2011 Stanford).

It was Krueger’s powerful game that dominated the first set, as the rising 20-year-old American, expected to make her Top 40 debut on Monday, slammed 21 winners compared to Bencic’s eight.

However, Bencic turned the tide in the second set, unleashing forehand winners down the line to grab the first two games. She quickly leveled the match, hitting 13 winners and making only three unforced errors in that set. After defeating Top 5 player Elena Rybakina in the semifinals, Bencic carried all the momentum into the final set. She broke for a 2-0 lead with a backhand winner and then secured another break, leading 5-1 and serving for the title.

On championship point, Bencic capped off the final rally with a forehand winner, marking her 30th winner of the match. The 27-year-old celebrated her first championship trophy in two years, holding her daughter Bella in her arms.
