WSDS 2025 Advocates for a Collaborative and Inclusive Strategy for Climate Action
The three-day World Sustainable Development Summit (WSDS) 2025, which concluded on March 7, 2025, adhered to its theme: “Partnerships for Accelerating Sustainable Development and Climate Solutions.” The summit highlighted the essential role that collaborative partnerships play in overcoming intricate sustainability challenges and addressing environmental issues.
The participants recognized that the global challenges we face are deeply interconnected and require unprecedented levels of cooperation. They asserted that partnerships are vital for expediting solutions and fostering effective implementation.
Mr. Nitin Desai, Chairman of TERI, stated, “Sustainable development serves as a bridge between the development community and the environmental community.” He emphasized the need for ongoing dialogue among diverse groups to ensure lasting environmental and developmental impacts. “The real challenge of sustainability lies in balancing development with environmental protection—an increasingly complex task,” he added.
In his opening address, Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Bhupender Yadav, reaffirmed India’s dedication to environmental responsibility and sustainability. He highlighted the importance of addressing speciesism, which prioritizes human interests at the expense of other species and ecosystems. “True sustainability can only be attained when all forms of life are deemed equally significant and when environmental policies incorporate the preservation and restoration of wildlife and biodiversity,” he emphasized. He declared that fostering collaborations for environmental sustainability is essential and that the time to act is now.
The Prime Minister of Guyana, Brigadier (Retd) Mark Phillips, echoed these sentiments, stressing the importance of international partnerships in addressing sustainability challenges. In his keynote address, he stated, “Guyana exemplifies leadership and collaboration in pursuing sustainability, as our growth does not compromise environmental integrity.”
Marina Silva, Brazil’s Minister of Environment and Climate Change, also underscored the urgency of global collaboration in confronting climate change. “As we approach COP30, it is essential to expedite the commitments made in Dubai and Baku, advance our shifts from fossil fuels, and increase climate finance,” she remarked during her keynote speech.
The 24th edition of WSDS, held from March 5 to 7, featured leaders from various sectors—public and private, corporate and academic—involved in meaningful discussions and strategic policy dialogues, culminating in bold global commitments.
According to TERI, initial global assessments indicate that achieving the target of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels will demand a 43% reduction in global emissions by 2030. In contrast, the current nationally determined contributions (NDCs) submitted during the 2015 UN Climate Change Conference in Paris are projected to yield only a 2% decrease.
Similarly, a mid-point review of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) revealed notable challenges: out of 69 targets, only 13% are on track, and 18% are not being monitored at all. These findings highlight crucial gaps in both implementation and data availability necessary for measuring progress effectively.
In a special “Global Leadership” video address, UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina J. Mohammed reiterated the UN’s commitment to global climate action and stressed the need for accelerating progress toward the SDGs. She addressed pressing climate challenges, noting, “Hunger is rising, and we have recorded the warmest years on record, with CO2 levels continuously increasing. However, we must not lose hope or lower our ambitions. It’s time to prioritize the SDGs as a comprehensive plan for people, the planet, and prosperity.”
Martin Raiser, Vice-President of the World Bank, emphasized the importance of sustainable financing and international collaboration in achieving climate goals. He remarked, “WSDS serves as an excellent platform for sharing ideas and experiences to drive the change we seek. We view the green transition as a catalyst for investment and job growth. India, because of its scale, innovative spirit, and vulnerability to climate impacts, is uniquely positioned to lead this transition, focusing on resilience through resource allocation and adaptation for households and businesses.”
In her keynote address during the concluding session, Dia Mirza, an actor, producer, UNEP Goodwill Ambassador, and UN Secretary-General’s Advocate for the SDGs, highlighted the impact of individual and collective actions in combating climate challenges. “The journey ahead is fraught with difficulties. There will be challenges and moments of uncertainty. Yet, if we unite and maintain our commitment to justice, equity, and sustainability, I believe we can meet this moment with the urgency and determination it demands,” she stated.
