WPL 2025: Mumbai Indians Celebrate Their Second Championship Victory
A year ago, the players of the Mumbai Indians were left in tears after their defeat in the Eliminator to the eventual champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2024 in New Delhi. Fast forward to Saturday night, and the mood had shifted dramatically as the MI squad celebrated their second WPL title, defeating the Delhi Capitals by eight runs at Brabourne Stadium.
This victory was spearheaded by captain Harmanpreet Kaur, whose remarkable innings of 66 helped MI post a total of 149/7 on a fresh pitch. In their pursuit of 150 runs, Delhi Capitals faltered, with Nat Sciver-Brunt delivering a standout performance (3-30) including the crucial wicket of Marizanne Kapp, while Amelia Kerr provided solid support with 2-25, restricting DC to 141/9 in their 20 overs and securing the WPL 2025 title for MI.

“Having won previously, expectations can run high. But with our experience in big matches, it didn’t feel overwhelming. Our team meetings are straightforward. They may have won before us, but today was a fresh begining. With our strong squad, we knew we had to seize this opportunity,” said all-rounder Amanjot Kaur.

“As soon as we reached our target, I felt confident in our victory. After playing for a decade, this wasn’t my first big moment. I want to experience this winning sensation as often as possible,” remarked all-rounder Sanskriti Gupta.
Amelia Kerr, who celebrated a T20 World Cup win with New Zealand last year, expressed her joy at securing another WPL title with MI. “This year has been exceptional for me. I’m thrilled to share the dressing room with such remarkable individuals. Ultimately, it’s about celebrating with amazing teammates.” She also praised her teammate Kamalini: “Kamalini has been incredible. This competition showcases so much talent on the big stage, and I’m pleased to contribute.”
Kamalini, who celebrated winning the U19 Women’s T20 World Cup with India earlier this year, was ecstatic about her first WPL title. “I felt a bit nervous but thoroughly enjoyed batting. My family must have been thrilled. Capturing my first six was exhilarating! Everyone fielded with immense energy. Through the WPL, I learned a lot, particularly on the mental aspects of the game.”
Wicketkeeper-batter Yastika Bhatia shared in the excitement of winning the WPL in front of 14,700 home fans. “To achieve this in front of our home crowd is an unparalleled experience. I relish keeping wickets against some of the best in the game, and I’m fortunate to have them as teammates.”
All-rounder Sajeevan Sajana dedicated the victory to the supportive staff, led by head coach Charlotte Edwards. “I’m extremely proud and happy to be part of this family. Their unwavering support creates an incredible energy both on and off the field.”
“Last season didn’t go as planned, but our meticulous planning and hard work this season paid off. This trophy belongs to everyone who supported us behind the scenes. I’m incredibly proud of my journey, and I want to inspire others to stay positive and resilient, no matter the obstacles,” she added.
Jhulan Goswami, MI bowling coach, praised the performances of Shabnim Ismail and Nat Sciver-Brunt, the leading run-getter of WPL 2025. “What an outstanding performance! Shabnim is a fighter who pushes to lead from the front, and that’s the spirit we cherish as a team.”
“While in the dugout, it’s hard to stay calm, but you must maintain composure. Our message was clear: we needed wickets in the powerplay. Once we achieved that, we felt in control of the game,” she stated.
“Nat’s dedication is noteworthy. Knowing that her partner (former England pacer Katherine Sciver-Brunt) is expecting, it’s remarkable for her to step up and lead the team,” she remarked, also praising the younger players who stepped up during the tournament.
On her coaching partnership with Charlotte Edwards, Jhulan said, “Our collaboration began post-retirement, and it has been a tremendous learning experience. She keeps me engaged with her tactical approach. Competing against her taught me about leadership and mentality, and I aim to apply those lessons here.”
“This team is brimming with potential. We have batting depth, a mix of international stars, and promising young talents. It’s crucial to maintain their positive mindset and allow them to enjoy the game,” she concluded.
Nita Ambani, owner of MI, commended the team for their remarkable achievement. “Sitting in the dugout, my heart was racing, but I knew I could trust my girls. They are unstoppable! They fought fiercely till the end. Nat had an outstanding season, particularly with those three crucial wickets.”
“Harman’s captaincy was phenomenal. If you saw our dugout, it was filled with energy; there was never a dull moment as they clapped and cheered each other on. Two titles in just three years!”
“It’s not just about my girls; it’s about empowering all young girls. Look at what they can achieve when given support. I am immensely proud to be the owner of the Mumbai Indians. Our franchise is committed to empowering young girls through sports. Education and sports go hand in hand, and it’s vital for parents to encourage their daughters to play.”

Tim David Faces Criticism for Obscene Celebration against Mumbai Indians
IPL 2026 : In a dramatic IPL 2026 clash, Royal Challengers Bengaluru player Tim David has landed in controversy for allegedly making an obscene gesture after his team’s thrilling win against Mumbai Indians.
The incident took place during the 54th match of the Indian Premier League in Raipur. Batting first, Mumbai Indians scored 167 runs in 20 overs and set a competitive target for RCB.
While chasing the target, Royal Challengers Bengaluru needed 15 runs in the final over. The match went down to the last ball, where RCB required two runs for victory. Rasikh Dar helped the team secure a thrilling win in the final delivery.
Soon after the victory, Tim David, who was in the dugout, was seen allegedly showing his middle finger towards the Mumbai Indians camp during the celebrations. The video of the incident quickly went viral on social media and triggered criticism from cricket fans.
Reports suggest that match officials could take disciplinary action against the Australian batter. Under the ICC Code of Conduct, obscene or offensive gestures are considered a serious offence.
Such behaviour usually falls under Level 1 or Level 2 breaches of the ICC rules. Players found guilty can face fines ranging from 50 percent to 100 percent of their match fees. Demerit points may also be added to their disciplinary record. Repeated offences can even lead to suspension from matches.

Pooran Super over Call Sparks Criticism
Sports: Lucknow Super Giants’ captain Rishabh Pant faced criticism after a failed Super Over decision against Kolkata Knight Riders. LSG sent Nicholas Pooran and Aiden Markram to bat, with Pooran on strike against Sunil Narine.
Pooran was bowled on the first ball, leading to heavy criticism from fans. Many questioned the decision, especially because Narine had earlier troubled Pooran in a past Super Over.
LSG coach Justin Langer defended the move. He said the team trusted Pooran as he has faced Narine many times and has a strong record against him. He added that teams must back their best players even in difficult moments.
Langer also said Pooran is one of the best T20 players in recent years but is currently low on confidence. He assured that the team is working hard to help him regain form
