WPL 2025: Ellyse Perry’s Stellar 90 Leads RCB to 180 Against UP Warriorz

Ellyse Perry’s outstanding unbeaten innings of 90 and Danielle Wyatt-Hodge’s solid 57 propelled Royal Challengers Bengaluru to a total of 180/6 in 20 overs against UP Warriorz during the ninth match of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2025 at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium on Monday.
Once again, Ellyse Perry showcased her remarkable skills, reinforcing her role as the team’s pillar of strength. In her second home game of the season, she played a commanding innings that provided RCB with a defendable score, even as wickets fell at regular intervals. Wyatt-Hodge’s contribution was invaluable, as she notched her first fifty of the season before falling at a critical moment.
—
Choosing to bat first, RCB started cautiously against Chinelle Henry, who generated significant movement early on. The opening over saw Smriti Mandhana and Wyatt-Hodge mustering just two runs.
—
However, Wyatt-Hodge quickly settled into her rhythm, capitalizing on a full toss from Grace Harris to send it over the boundary for six. Mandhana was given an early lifeline after a dropped catch at backward point but ultimately fell to Deepti Sharma for six as she attempted a cut shot, only to drag it onto her stumps.
Perry then joined Wyatt-Hodge at the crease and quickly found her footing, striking back-to-back boundaries off Sophie Ecclestone during the power play. Wyatt-Hodge also found her groove, firing a cut shot past short third and guiding RCB to 42/1 after six overs. Perry demonstrated her dominance by hitting a six over long-on against Saima Thakor, while Kranti Goud kept the bowling tight from the other end.
As the power play concluded, the duo effectively rotated the strike. Perry narrowly escaped a close call when an edge off Kranti Goud nearly reached the diving wicketkeeper. However, she soon found her scoring touch, elegantly crafting a four through point off Tahlia McGrath, while Wyatt-Hodge remained stable at the other end.
The scoring rate surged in the 14th over as Perry and Wyatt-Hodge pummeled Deepti Sharma, gathering 14 runs, including a towering six from Wyatt-Hodge and a fine leg glance for four from Perry. The highlight of the innings arrived when Perry brought up her half-century with a single off Kranti Goud, equalling Meg Lanning’s record for the most fifty-plus scores in WPL history. Wyatt-Hodge kept the momentum going with three consecutive boundaries, including a powerful cover drive.
Just as RCB seemed ready to launch a late-innings onslaught, McGrath delivered a key wicket, breaking the 94-run partnership from 66 balls by dismissing Wyatt-Hodge for 57 runs off 41 deliveries. The English batter mistimed a cut shot, resulting in Sehrawat completing a sharp catch and signaling the end of a well-crafted innings. Nevertheless, UP Warriorz faced further pressure as Richa Ghosh entered the scene with a boundary off her first ball, maintaining RCB’s strong position.
Ghosh attempted to keep up the aggressive momentum but fell into Chinelle Henry’s trap, mishitting a short delivery back to the bowler. Kanika Ahuja’s fleeting innings ended abruptly as she was run out trying to connect with a reverse sweep off Deepti Sharma, thanks to Uma Chetry’s quick glovework.
With wickets falling at the other end, Perry took it upon herself to push the pace, striking a four and a six off Tahlia McGrath in quick succession. Georgia Wareham briefly joined the attack with a confident boundary over mid-off but was soon run out after a mix-up due to Saima Thakor’s alert fielding.
Despite the challenges, Perry remained composed, attacking the Warriorz bowlers with relentless precision. She raced toward the 80s with back-to-back boundaries, threatening to become the first centurion of WPL 2025. Kim Garth offered brief support, but Sophie Ecclestone’s disciplined bowling in the final over thwarted Perry’s century ambitions.
A last-ball run-out of Garth concluded the innings, leaving Perry unbeaten on a brilliant 90 runs from 56 balls. Her innings proved instrumental in setting RCB’s competitive total of 180.
Brief scores:
Royal Challengers Bengaluru 180/6 in 20 overs (Ellyse Perry 90 not out, Danielle Wyatt-Hodge 57; Chinelle Henry 1-34, Tahlia McGrath 1-30) against UP Warriorz

La Liga: Barca and Real Set for Home Matches Following Varying Champions League Outcomes

FC Barcelona is set to defend its lead at the top of the La Liga standings this weekend, with both they and second-placed Real Madrid facing challenging opponents on home turf. Barcelona currently holds 70 points from 31 matches, while Real Madrid trails with 66 points.
Barcelona will host Celta Vigo on Saturday night, after successfully advancing to the Champions League semifinals, despite a 3-1 loss to Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday night.
—
In that match, the Catalan giants appeared fatigued, and coach Hansi Flick may need to consider giving Lamine Yamal a break, as the young talent has played extensively. Inigo Martinez is expected to be well-rested after not featuring on Tuesday, while Gerard Martin will continue in left back due to Alejandro Balde’s injury.
—
Real Madrid aims to keep their domestic ambitions alive when they face Athletic Club Bilbao at home on Sunday night, following their Champions League elimination (5-1 on aggregate) against Arsenal on Wednesday. Madrid struggled in both matches, leading to speculation in the Spanish press that Carlo Ancelotti could be dismissed at the season’s end. Kylian Mbappe will miss the match due to suspension, but midfielder Dani Ceballos is back after an extended absence.
Athletic, currently in fourth place, travels to Madrid after competing in a Europa League match against Rangers on Thursday.
Fifth-placed Villarreal boosted their Champions League aspirations with a 2-1 victory over Betis last weekend and can take another step toward that goal at home against an inconsistent Real Sociedad.
Betis will visit Girona on Monday night, with the latter seeking to snap a nine-game winless streak that has brought them perilously close to the relegation zone.
Espanyol faces Getafe at home on Saturday, and a victory would likely secure their top-flight survival after recent wins against Rayo Vallecano and Celta Vigo.
Rayo’s coach Inigo Perez has signed a contract extension until 2026, with his team set to play at home against a confident Valencia.
Valencia’s recent win over Sevilla has brought them closer to safety, and under Carlos Corberan, their form suggests they could challenge for a top-four finish if maintained over a full campaign.
Sevilla, having dismissed Xavier Garcia Pimienta following last week’s loss to Valencia, has brought back veteran Joaquin Caparros for a fourth term in charge, starting with a home match against Alaves. Alaves currently sits fourth from bottom but may find themselves in the relegation zone depending on Leganes’ performance against Mallorca, who are vying for European qualification.
Las Palmas could climb out of the relegation zone after their surprising win against Getafe last week, which likely saved coach Diego Martinez’s job. However, they face a tough challenge on Saturday when they host third-placed Atletico Madrid.
Atletico eased past Valladolid on Monday with standout performances from Julian Alvarez, Giuliano Simeone, and Alexander Sorloth, demonstrating a potent offensive threat.
