Hollywood superstar Will Smith is revisiting past wounds as he reflects on the Chris Rock Oscars incident in his latest album, ‘Based on a True Story.’ The album’s opening track, ‘Int. Barbershop — Day,’ begins with the chilling statement, “Will Smith is canceled,” according to ‘Variety.’

The track features contributions from Smith’s long-time collaborator DJ Jazzy Jeff and B. Simone, with various voices exchanging opinions and rumors about the actor in a freestyle format. One voice boldly questions, “Who the f*** does Will Smith think he is?” Another responds, “I ain’t never going to forgive him for that shit he did.”

As reported by ‘Variety’, the controversy erupted when Smith slapped Rock during the live 2022 Oscars broadcast. The altercation was sparked by a joke Rock made about Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith. In retaliation, Smith stormed the stage and struck Rock, later shouting from his seat, “Keep my wife’s name out of your f****** mouth.” Later in the evening, Smith returned to the stage to accept the Best Actor Oscar for his role in ‘King Richard.’

The track ‘Int. Barbershop — Day’ directly addresses the Oscars incident with the lines, “I heard he won the Oscar but he had to give it back/ And you know they only made him do that shit because he’s Black.” However, it’s important to note that Smith was not required to return his Oscar; rather, the Academy imposed a 10-year ban on him attending any of its events.

Smith also resigned from the Academy and expressed his “deep remorse” in a public apology for his actions. The song later touches on Smith’s infamous reaction to Rock’s joke with the lyrics, “Him and Jada both crazy girl, what you talkin’ bout?/ You better keep his wife’s name out of your mouth.”

‘Based on a True Story’ represents Smith’s first solo music project in two decades.
