Wife Among Four Suspects in Gruesome Meghalaya Murder; Police Solves Case in Just Seven Days

Published

on

In a shocking turn of events, the Meghalaya Police have reportedly solved the murder case of Raja Raghuvanshi, an Indore resident, just a week after his body was found. Raja, who was on his honeymoon with his wife Sonam in the scenic Meghalaya hills, is believed to have been killed in a premeditated scheme allegedly orchestrated by his spouse.

The incident, which began as a missing persons case, took a dark turn when Raja’s body was discovered on June 2 in a gorge near Wei Sawdong Falls, a well-known trekking site close to Cherrapunjee. The couple, married on May 11, was reported missing on May 24, after their scooter was located abandoned along the Shillong–Sohra road. Local villagers last spotted them on May 23, leaving their homestay in Nongriat with three unfamiliar men.

As part of a Special Investigation Team (SIT), authorities combed the area, recovering Raja’s blood-stained clothes, a raincoat, and a weapon near the crime scene. This mounting evidence suggested foul play, prompting the Meghalaya Police to extend their investigation beyond state lines.

The ensuing operation was rapid and multi-faceted. Within days, three individuals, allegedly involved in the murder, were apprehended in Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh. In a dramatic development, Sonam Raghuvanshi turned herself in at a police station in Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh. Investigators believe she plotted the murder and arranged for the attackers prior to their honeymoon, framing it as a meticulously planned conspiracy.

Director General of Police Idashisha Nongrang confirmed the arrests, stating that Sonam is accused of luring Raja to a secluded trekking path where the hired assailants awaited. “This was a premeditated murder disguised as a honeymoon,” Nongrang explained to the media. A fourth suspect remains at large, and a manhunt is currently underway.

The nature of the crime has left both Raja’s and Sonam’s families reeling. Raja’s relatives are demanding justice and clarity on the motives behind the murder, while Sonam’s father maintains her innocence and asserts that she has been framed, urging for a CBI inquiry—a call echoed by Raja’s family as well.

This case has captivated national interest not only for the shocking betrayal but also for the swift and effective response by the Meghalaya Police. Chief Minister Conrad Sangma commended the police force for their timely arrests and professionalism, labeling the development as a “major breakthrough.”

“In just 7 days, the #meghalayapolice has achieved a significant breakthrough in the Raja murder case … 3 assailants from Madhya Pradesh have been arrested, the woman has surrendered, and efforts are ongoing to capture one more suspect.. great job #meghalayapolice,” Sangma tweeted on Monday.
