Vijender Singh: Indian Boxers Need Greater International Exposure to Win Medals at LA 2028

Published

on

Olympic bronze medalist boxer Vijender Singh has emphasized the need for greater international exposure for Indian boxers to enhance their chances of securing medals at the 2028 Los Angeles Games. He also stressed the importance of conducting new and transparent elections for the Boxing Federation of India (BFI).

Since the Paris Olympics, boxing activity has been relatively low. Last October and November, youth boxers, both male and female, participated in the U19 World Boxing Championships held in the USA.

The men’s national championships were held in early January in Bareilly (UP), while the women’s event, originally set for February 21-28 in Lucknow, has now been postponed.

Some boxers, including Tokyo Olympic bronze medalist Lovlina Borgohain, took part in the National Games in Uttarakhand.

“As our country continues to advance in sports, it is crucial that Indian boxers gain more international exposure in competitions to secure medals at the 2028 LA Olympics,” Vijender posted on X on Wednesday.

“For this, we need to organize fresh and fair elections as soon as possible to establish a strong federation. I would be more than happy to lend my experience if entrusted with any responsibilities by our government. @PMOIndia @mansukhmandviya,” he added.

On Monday, the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) established a five-member ad hoc committee, including veteran boxer Shiva Thapa, to oversee the daily operations of the BFI, citing administrative turmoil within the federation and its failure to conduct timely elections.

The current term of BFI officials expired on February 2, but elections could not take place due to a pending case regarding the previous elections, which resulted in a ruling against the BFI.

The committee will be led by Madukant Pathak, with Rajesh Bhandari serving as vice chairman. The other members include Virendra Singh Thakur, Shiva Thapa, and DP Bhatt.

The ad hoc committee will “address the concerns of the boxing community, assist athletes in participating in upcoming international competitions, and work towards conducting the IBF elections as soon as possible.”

Barcelona Striker Robert Lewandowski Likely Out of Copa del Rey Final

Published

on

FC Barcelona’s forward Robert Lewandowski has suffered an injury to the semitendinosus muscle in his left thigh, putting his participation in the Copa del Rey final against Real Madrid on April 27 (IST) in jeopardy.

While the club hasn’t officially provided a timeline for his recovery, it is anticipated that Lewandowski will be sidelined for two to three weeks, potentially missing the upcoming semifinal against Inter Milan, with the first leg scheduled for May 1 (IST).

According to the club’s statement, “Tests conducted on Sunday confirmed that Robert Lewandowski sustained an injury to the semitendinosus muscle in his left thigh. His return to team training will depend on the recovery process of the injury.”

This injury caused the top scorer to miss out on marking his 100th La Liga appearance with a goal, a milestone he achieved in his third season with the club, having played in Barcelona’s dramatic 4-3 victory over Celta Vigo on Saturday.

During his 77 minutes on the field, the Galician side successfully contained the Polish striker. He had an early opportunity with a curling shot that didn’t find the target, which could have marked his 100th goal for FC Barcelona.

Lewandowski is experiencing his most fruitful season in a Barca shirt, scoring 40 goals across 48 appearances in La Liga, the Champions League, the Copa del Rey, and the Spanish Super Cup: 25 in La Liga, 11 in the Champions League, 3 in the Copa del Rey, and 1 in the Super Cup.

With 25 league goals, he currently leads the race for the Pichichi trophy, outpacing Kylian Mbappe by three goals, Ante Budimir by nine, and Raphinha and Oihan Sancet by ten. Only time will reveal how much further the FC Barcelona striker, now a La Liga centurion, can enhance his goal tally.
