Vidya Balan on International Women’s Day: “Financial Independence is Empowerment—Women Must Step Up!”

Published

on

Actress Vidya Balan recently highlighted the significance of women taking charge of their finances, calling financial independence a vital step toward living authentically. The ‘Kahaani’ actress, who has just been appointed as the brand ambassador for a prominent bank, shared that her realization of “money as power” marked a pivotal moment in her life. Reflecting on her personal journey, Balan asserted that managing finances isn’t merely about earning; it’s about possessing the confidence to make decisions regarding spending, saving, and investing.

“Years ago, I came to understand that money is indeed power,” Vidya explained. “It’s not just about income; it’s about owning your financial narrative. You must decide how to spend, save, invest, and grow your wealth, as financial control empowers you to navigate life boldly and unapologetically.”

Balan’s understanding of financial independence transformed during a critical phase just before her marriage. Although she had been earning independently for years, she had not actively managed her finances until a casual remark from her father prompted her to reconsider her situation.
“As I was preparing for marriage, my father managed my finances,” she recounted. “He suggested, ‘Now that you’re getting married, let your husband take over.’ I questioned, ‘What about me? Why can’t I manage my own money?’”

That question sparked her journey toward financial autonomy. Vidya acknowledged that she had previously shown little interest in financial matters, but once she took control, she discovered the empowerment that comes from understanding and managing her own resources.

“Many women are unaware of how much money they possess. After I took charge, I saw my finances grow, and my perspective changed completely,” she stated.

For Vidya Balan, the relevance of money extends beyond mere material wealth. She believes that financial security enables individuals—particularly women—to break free from limiting situations.
“While money isn’t the key to happiness, it allows you to embrace life fully. It’s not about amassing great wealth—having enough to feel self-sufficient is what really matters. That feeling of ‘I am enough’ is truly empowering,” she emphasized.

Balan pointed out that financial dependency often traps women in unfulfilling relationships or jobs that suppress their aspirations. “Too frequently, especially for women, financial dependency holds them back. Many are unable to pursue their dreams simply because they haven’t taken control of their finances.”
