Vicky Kaushal’s ‘Chhaava’ Experiences Box Office Slump Following Nagpur Unrest

Published

Vicky Kaushal’s film ‘Chhaava’ has been making waves both for its impressive box office numbers and the unforeseen political tensions in Nagpur. The movie, which depicts the life of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj and his fight against Aurangzeb, has become a focal point in Maharashtra’s current political turmoil.

Despite its solid performance, the film experienced a decline in ticket sales during the weekdays. On Tuesday, it earned ₹2.5 crore, bringing its total domestic gross to ₹567.8 crore, according to ‘Sacnilk’. While ‘Chhaava’ continues to achieve significant financial success, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis linked it to the ongoing unrest in Nagpur.

In a session of the Maharashtra Assembly, Fadnavis asserted that the film has sparked public outrage against Aurangzeb. He called for peace, stating, “The movie has rekindled emotions, but it is essential to maintain harmony in Maharashtra.”

His comments followed violent incidents in Nagpur on Monday. Tensions flared up after allegations emerged regarding the desecration of a sacred text during protests by right-wing groups advocating for the removal of Aurangzeb’s tomb in Khuldabad, Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar. The situation remains fraught, with law enforcement on high alert.

Maharashtra CM #DevendraFadnavis remarked that the violence in #Nagpur appears to be “a well-planned attack.” He indicated that rumors had circulated about the burning of religious items as the VHP and #BajrangDal staged protests in the state’s winter capital.

‘Chhaava’ achieved a strong finish in its fourth week with total earnings of ₹55.95 crore. The film experienced a notable increase in collections on Friday, with a rise of 61.11% to earn ₹7.25 crore. This upward trend continued over the weekend, recording ₹7.9 crore on Saturday and ₹8 crore on Sunday. However, Monday saw a sharp decline of 66.88%, as the film garnered only ₹2.65 crore, followed by another decrease on Tuesday. On that day, the film recorded a Hindi occupancy rate of 10.42% and a Telugu occupancy of 12.77%.

In terms of domestic earnings, ‘Chhaava’ has outstripped several of Bollywood’s major blockbusters. Globally, its total collection has surpassed ₹764 crore, positioning it among the highest-grossing Indian films. With ‘Stree 2’ currently holding at ₹597 crore, ‘Chhaava’ is just ₹30 crore shy of surpassing it.
