Vicky Kaushal on ‘Chhaava’: “This is the most challenging role I’ve ever taken on”

Published

on

Vicky Kaushal is preparing for the release of **‘Chhaava’**, in which he takes on the formidable role of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj. The actor describes this as the most challenging role of his career, requiring extensive physical and mental preparation.

Portraying a historical icon demands not only physical resemblance but also a deep understanding of the era, the culture, and the responsibilities associated with the role. To embody Sambhaji Maharaj authentically, Vicky gained approximately 25 kg and underwent intense training in horse riding and sword fighting.

The real test, however, lay in the discipline required for such a transformation. Vicky shared that adjusting to the strict regimen was tough, especially given the commitment lasted nearly two years.

Beyond his physical alteration for **‘Chhaava’**, Vicky fully immersed himself in the historical background of the Maratha Empire. He worked closely with director Laxman Utekar, engaging in daily discussions about not only the script but also the cultural and historical intricacies of the period.

Rather than relying solely on literature, he opted for in-depth conversations with Utekar to grasp the complexities of Sambhaji Maharaj’s life. This collaborative approach allowed him to connect with the character on a much deeper level.

The intensity of the role often lingered off set, with Vicky admitting that living in character impacted his mindset, making him more reflective and focused even when the cameras were off. While this immersion was essential for an authentic portrayal, it also took a mental toll.

Despite the rigorous filming schedule, Vicky expresses his gratitude for his wife, Katrina Kaif, who provided unwavering support. She understood his need for solitude during the filming and allowed him the essential time to transition in and out of character.

Once filming concluded and Vicky lost the extra weight, Katrina playfully teased him about his transformation. She would frequently send him clips from his **‘Chhaava’** days, jokingly inquiring where that version of him had gone.

Vicky hinted that his upcoming film, **‘Mahavatar’**, where he portrays Chiranjeevi Parashurama, will necessitate yet another intense transformation, continuing the physical challenges.

Besides his personal preparation, **‘Chhaava’** has had its own tumultuous journey. Starring Akshaye Khanna and Rashmika Mandanna, the film depicts the life of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, the son of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, beginning with his coronation in 1681.

However, a dance sequence showcasing Sambhaji Maharaj performing the traditional Maharashtrian **‘Lezim’** sparked controversy, leading to its removal after objections from political figures, including Maharashtra Minister Uday Samant.
