Vairamuthu Criticizes Tamil Film Industry for Unapproved Use of His Lyrics as Movie Titles

Published

on

Acclaimed Tamil poet and lyricist Vairamuthu has criticized the Tamil film industry for using his renowned lyrics as film titles without seeking his consent. Taking to his X (formerly Twitter) account, the veteran writer, who has significantly shaped Tamil cinema over the decades, voiced his frustration.

In his heartfelt message, Vairamuthu addressed the recurring practice of filmmakers borrowing his lines as titles, highlighting their failure to inform him or show even basic courtesy. “Many of my poetic lines have been used as movie titles. Not once has anyone approached me for my approval, nor have they shown me respect,” he lamented.

He expressed his feelings in Tamil, stating:

***என் பல்லவிகள் பலவற்றைத்
தமிழ்க் திரையுலகினால்
படத் தலைப்புகளாகப்
பயன்படுத்தப்படுகிறது.
எடுத்துக்கொண்டவர்கள் யாரும்
எனக்கு அனுமதி கேட்டதில்லை,
மரியாதைக்கும் ஒரு வார்த்தையும்
கேட்கவில்லை.***

While Vairamuthu did not categorize his concern as a copyright issue, he pointed out a perceived lack of basic manners within the industry. “I have never questioned anyone or confronted them directly,” he stated. “In a world where even wealth is tightly held, I take joy in seeing knowledge shared. Yet isn’t it uncivilized not to even ask?”

His statements prompted varied reactions online. Some users suggested that once poetic lines are part of a song, they become part of the cultural fabric and do not require special permission to be reused as film titles. Others rallied in support of Vairamuthu, asserting that courtesy and recognition should always be afforded to creators.

Adding to the discussion, actor Aadhav Kannadasan recounted his own experience with Vairamuthu. The actor, noted for films like ‘Yaamirukka Bayamey’ and ‘Karungaapiyam’, revealed that he sought Vairamuthu’s permission in 2013 when he used the lyric line ‘Ponmaalai Pozhudhu’ as his film’s title. Aadhav tweeted, “Sir, with all due respect, we received your permission for ‘Ponmaalai Pozhudhu’. You mentioned it was special since I am the grandson of Kaviyarasu Kannadasan, and you felt proud. The film’s lyrics were penned by @madhankarky. Thank you, sir.”

Vairamuthu, a literary titan in Tamil cinema, holds esteemed accolades including the Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan, and the Sahitya Akademi Award. His lyrics have been revered for years, marking his contributions to Indian poetry and film music as truly legendary.
