Udupi: Fishing Boat Sinks After Collision with Driftwood in Malpe
On January 4th, two fishermen, Ravi Salyan and Harish, were transporting a fishing boat named “Tavakal” from Malpe port to Gangolli for repairs. While navigating about 2 nautical miles from Gangolli port, a large piece of driftwood suddenly collided with the boat. The impact caused damage to the boat’s front bottom, leading to water entering the vessel.
As the water flow increased and the boat began to sink, nearby fishermen received the distress signal and quickly dispatched another boat named “Jalarani” to rescue the two. Both fishermen were safely rescued.

Matka Gambling Accused Externed to Chikkamagaluru
Udupi: The Udupi District Police have externed a 48-year-old man accused in multiple matka gambling cases to maintain public peace and law and order.

The accused has been identified as Ramaraj alias Ramesh Aras. Udupi Superintendent of Police issued the externment order.
The accused has been directed to stay within the limits of Chikkamagaluru Town Police Station.
Police said five cases related to matka gambling have been registered against him at Udupi Town Police Station.
He has already been convicted in four of those cases. One more case is still pending before the court.

According to the police, the externment order was issued to prevent illegal activities and to protect public peace and safety.
The order will remain in force as directed by the Udupi District Police.

Orientation Programme Held at Upendra Pai Memorial College
Udupi: Upendra Pai Memorial College (UPMC), Kunjibettu, organised an orientation programme for newly admitted students of the 2026–27 academic year on July 13 at the VBCL Auditorium on the college campus.

Dr. H. S. Ballal, Pro-Chancellor of MAHE, attended the programme as the chief guest. He said that India has a large youth population and students are an important part of it. He stressed that career skills are essential in today’s world. He said that finding a job is difficult without the right skills. He added that institutions are giving more importance to skill development and that students with good career skills have better employment opportunities.

Dr. Ballal also thanked the parents for choosing Upendra Pai Memorial College for their children’s education.

Dr. S. S. Pabla, Chairman of MSDC Manipal, addressed the gathering. He said the college provides many opportunities for students to develop their career skills and talents. He encouraged students to make the best use of these opportunities during their college life.

Student achiever Krupashree was honoured during the programme for her accomplishment.
College Principal Prof. Prabha Kamath, Prof. Asha, Dr. Padmalatha, and other faculty members were present at the event.

Minister U.T. Khader Inspects Mother and Child Hospital in Udupi
Udupi: Health Minister U.T. Khader visited the Koosamma Shambhu Shetty Memorial Haji Abdullah Mother and Child Hospital in Udupi and inspected the facilities.

During the visit, he interacted with patients and listened to their concerns.
He also held discussions with doctors about the issues faced by the hospital and the steps needed to improve its services.
The minister said several problems at the hospital were discussed, and efforts are being made to find suitable solutions.
He announced that a high-level meeting with senior officials has been scheduled for July 16 to discuss healthcare development in Udupi district.
A proposal worth around Rs.28 crore has been submitted to the State Government for additional manpower and medical equipment for the new Udupi District Hospital.

The minister said that once the new District Hospital becomes fully operational, the Koosamma Shambhu Shetty Memorial Haji Abdullah Mother and Child Hospital will be shifted to the old District Hospital building.
He said the move is expected to improve healthcare services and provide better facilities for mothers, children, and patients in the district.
