Udupi; Cattle thieves three injure, one arrested
Udupi: A dramatic turn of events unfolded at the Hejamady tollgate on Tuesday when a group of cattle thieves, fleeing from police, rammed their vehicle into law enforcement personnel, injuring three people. One of the accused was caught during the incident.
The injured include Gangolli Police Station’s Investigation PSI Basavaraj Kanashetty, constable Sandeep, and toll patrol vehicle driver Lohith. The arrested individual has been identified as Mohammed Sharoz (29), a resident of Suratkal, who has since been produced before the court.
The chase began when Gangolli police, traveling in a private car, intercepted an SUV carrying illegally transported cattle. As officers moved in to apprehend the suspects — including driver Sharoz, Safaan and Azeem from Kaup, and Rajik from Bajpe — one of the accused allegedly instructed the driver to ram into the officers.
In response, Sharoz struck PSI Basavaraj with the vehicle, knocking him down. The SUV then ran over his hand. With traffic congestion ahead due to KSRTC buses, the driver reversed the vehicle, injuring constable Sandeep in the process.
The vehicle then crashed into the toll patrol vehicle, injuring its driver Lohith. The impact forced the patrol vehicle to hit PSI Pavan Nayak’s parked car. Despite the chaos, the officers managed to capture driver Sharoz at the scene.
However, another accused seated beside Sharoz quickly took the wheel, forcefully pushing aside an oncoming car to create an escape path. He then fled through a narrow gap along with the remaining suspects.
It has come to light that the SUV was packed with four to five cattle, confined under cruel conditions.
In the aftermath, police have launched a district-wide manhunt and road blockades to locate the fleeing vehicle. A case has been registered at the Padubidri police station, with charges including attempted murder of police officers on duty and damage to public property. The investigation remains ongoing.
