Tripura Raises Concerns Over Bangladesh’s Embankment Construction Near ‘Zero Line’

Published

on

The Tripura Government has expressed significant concerns regarding the construction of embankments by Bangladesh along the ‘zero line’ of the India-Bangladesh border, highlighting breaches of border protocols and escalating local tensions. This matter is set to be officially discussed at the upcoming Joint Rivers Commission meeting between the two countries.

Bangladesh is in the process of reconstructing a substantial embankment near Alinagar in the Moulvibazar district, which is adjacent to Tripura’s Rangauti area. Portions of this embankment are encroaching upon the ‘zero line,’ raising alarm among residents of Kailashahar in Unakoti district.

Officials have confirmed that Bangladesh proceeded with the embankment extension without obtaining prior approval from Indian authorities. In light of this, India has lodged a formal objection and ordered a halt to construction, directing the Border Security Force (BSF) to prevent any further activity in the disputed zone until a diplomatic resolution is reached.

Amidst growing tensions, the Congress party organized a march to the Tripura-Bangladesh border on Saturday, urging the Central Government to take immediate action regarding the encroachment. The ‘zero line’ designates the boundary between India and Bangladesh, extending 150 yards on either side of the border pillar. Any construction within this area is strictly controlled and necessitates mutual consent from both nations.

With diplomatic talks now on the horizon, the resolution of this situation could establish a precedent for future border infrastructure projects involving India and Bangladesh.
