Tripura CM Manik Saha Emphasizes Cooperatives as a Pathway to Economic Growth and Stability

Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha emphasized the vital importance of cooperative societies in promoting economic growth, decreasing unemployment, and reducing militant activities within the state.

Speaking at the state-level conference on “Promotion and Development of Cooperatives” held at Rabindra Satabarsiki Bhavan on Tuesday, Saha highlighted the necessity of expanding the cooperative movement for socio-economic improvement.

Currently, approximately nine lakh individuals in Tripura are involved with cooperatives in various capacities. The Chief Minister expressed his hope that this figure could grow to between 20 and 30 lakh, significantly enhancing the state’s economy and improving the livelihoods of its people. “With a population of around 40 lakh, the potential for cooperatives is substantial,” Saha stated, underscoring the sector’s untapped possibilities.

He acknowledged the contributions of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah in reinforcing India’s cooperative framework since 2014, which has resulted in considerable growth across the nation. “A large segment of Tripura’s population has yet to be included in cooperatives. We must aim to engage at least 20 to 30 lakh people,” Saha noted.

The Chief Minister reiterated that greater involvement in cooperatives could tackle various socio-economic issues, ultimately fostering economic resilience. He outlined initiatives to modernize and expand Primary Agricultural Cooperative Credit Societies (PACS) by implementing digital infrastructure and creating multi-purpose PACS at the Panchayat level.

“Significant initiatives have been launched at the village level, including cooperatives for milk and fisheries, alongside the introduction of e-services through PACS,” he remarked.

Saha reaffirmed that a strong cooperative movement could radically change Tripura, aiming to make it free from poverty and corruption. He also stressed the necessity of increasing public awareness regarding the benefits of cooperatives, referring to it as a “bloodless revolution” capable of driving India’s economic advancement.

In light of India’s rise in the global economy under Prime Minister Modi’s leadership—climbing from the 11th to the 5th largest economy—Saha expressed confidence that enhancing cooperatives could help achieve the country’s ambition of ranking among the top three global economies.

The conference aimed to evaluate the influence of cooperatives in Tripura, identify existing challenges, and devise strategies for improved efficiency. Notable attendees included Cooperative Minister Shukla Charan Noatia, National Cooperative Union of India Chairman and former MP Dilip Sangani, and Chief Executive Sudhir Mahajan.
