Trends of Discontent: Religious Processions as Triggers of Conflict
Disputes over religious processions, loud music, and tensions incited by social media have repeatedly led to violent encounters. With the festivities of Ram Navami and Sarhul approaching, local authorities are on heightened alert, while political parties engage in a blame game.
In 2025, communal clashes during religious events in Jharkhand have escalated, with a notable incident occurring on March 25 in Hazaribagh. This clash involved two groups during the Mangala Julus procession near Jhanda Chowk on Jama Masjid Road.
As stone-pelting erupted, police intervened, using batons and firing four warning shots into the air to disperse the crowd. The presence of the Hazaribagh Superintendent of Police underscored the gravity of the situation. Although no casualties were reported, a large crowd gathered afterward, further intensifying local tensions.
This incident is part of a troubling pattern; numerous religious festivals in recent months have been tainted by violence, raising significant concerns about law enforcement’s effectiveness and communal harmony.
On February 2, tensions flared during the Saraswati Puja in Badabaru village, Khunti, stemming from a disagreement over the celebration’s site, necessitating police intervention. Just two days later, on February 4, a dispute concerning a Saraswati immersion procession in Gola, Ramgarh, culminated in stone-pelting and injuries. Furthermore, on February 7, clashes over loud music in Kashidih, Jamshedpur, resulted in injuries to three individuals.
On February 26, violence erupted during Maha Shivratri celebrations in Dumroun village, Hazaribagh, following a conflict over religious flags and loudspeakers near a madrasa. This quickly escalated into stone-pelting, arson, and vehicle vandalism, prompting a heavy police response.
Additional violence was recorded on March 14 during Holi celebrations at Ghodthamba Chowk, Giridih, when objections arose regarding a procession near a mosque. Property was set ablaze before security forces restored order.
The latest incident on March 26 in Hazaribagh coincided with Ram Navami, where a disagreement over music during the Mangala Julus procession led to stone-pelting and vandalism. Police had to engage in baton charges and fire warning shots to regain control.
The political ramifications of these clashes are becoming increasingly apparent. The BJP has sharply criticized the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) government for its inability to maintain law and order. Debates during the budget session of the Jharkhand Assembly became heated, with BJP legislators protesting outside the Assembly and accusing the government of failing to protect religious occasions.
BJP MLA Ujjwal Kumar Das raised concerns about whether Hindu festivals were being deliberately targeted, while Manoj Yadav demanded accountability for the Hazaribagh incident. Hazaribagh BJP MLA Pradeep Prasad claimed that streetlights were turned off prior to the violence, hinting at premeditated actions. Senior BJP leader CP Singh attributed the unrest to extremist elements and criticized the government’s inadequate response.
In response, the JMM government accused the BJP of exacerbating religious tensions for electoral gain, with JMM MLA Sameer Mohanty stating that the BJP has a history of leveraging religious issues to create divisions among voters. He even suggested that BJP legislators should receive treatment at Kanke, referencing Jharkhand’s mental health facility. Defending the government, he reaffirmed the commitment to maintaining peace and safeguarding all communities.
A pattern has emerged from these clashes, often occurring when religious processions operate near mosques and madrasas. Disputes frequently arise over loud music, with some communities objecting to high-volume celebrations. Minor disagreements often escalate into significant violence, fueled by rumors and online outrage. Serious incidents, notably during Holi and Maha Shivratri, have led to arson and vandalism, inflicting financial losses and exacerbating religious tensions.
With ongoing Ram Navami processions and the impending tribal festival Sarhul, security forces have been deployed to sensitive locations. Senior police officials are closely monitoring these events to prevent further disturbances.
The escalating number of communal clashes has cast doubt on law enforcement’s capacity to uphold peace. The frequency of violence during religious events places additional pressure on police forces and deepens social divides.
The opposition holds the government responsible for the escalating situation, while the ruling party accuses rivals of exploiting religious tensions for political gain. As tensions rise and the political discourse intensifies, the upcoming weeks will be critical in determining whether Jharkhand can restore tranquility or succumb further to religious and political strife.
To move forward, it is essential to enhance law enforcement capabilities, encourage dialogue between communities, and ensure that religious events do not trigger violence. Failure to take timely action could result in increased instability and worsening communal tensions in Jharkhand.
