Tottenham Hotspur Dismiss Ange Postecoglou Despite Europa League Victory
Tottenham Hotspur have parted ways with Ange Postecoglou just 16 days after his remarkable victory against Manchester United in the Europa League final, marking the club’s first European trophy in 41 years.
Postecoglou joined Spurs from Celtic in the summer of 2023 and ended a 17-year trophy drought by leading the North London club to UEFA Europa League success in Bilbao.

Despite this triumph, Postecoglou’s tenure was cut short due to the team’s poor performance in the Premier League, finishing 17th with a record of 11 wins, 5 draws, and 22 losses during the 2024-25 season.

In a reflective statement, Postecoglou expressed pride in his time at Tottenham: “Leading one of England’s historic football clubs and restoring its glory will stay with me forever. The remarkable night in Bilbao was the result of two years of hard work and belief in our vision.”
Postecoglou had confidently stated at the start of his first season that he consistently brings home silverware in his second campaign at new clubs. He fulfilled that promise by securing the Europa League, a remarkable feat for a side that has struggled for trophies. This unexpected dismissal came after he assured Spurs fans that ‘Season 3 is always better than Season 2’ during the victory parade.
His sacking marks the appointment of Spurs’ fifth permanent manager in six years since Mauricio Pochettino’s departure in 2019, with Brentford’s Thomas Frank reportedly the frontrunner.
The club’s official statement read: “After a thorough review of performances, the Club announces that Ange Postecoglou has been relieved of his duties. We sincerely thank Ange for his dedication and contributions during his two years at the Club and recognize him as only the third manager in our history to win a European trophy, alongside Bill Nicholson and Keith Burkinshaw.”
“While the 2023/24 Premier League season began positively, we recorded just 78 points from the last 66 league games, leading to our worst-ever PL finish. Although there were challenges—such as injuries and prioritizing our European campaign—we must not base decisions solely on emotions tied to recent triumphs,” the statement concluded.
