TN Governor Attributes Katchatheevu Cession to Sri Lanka to Congress and DMK

Published

on

Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi, echoing the views of the BJP, on Sunday placed blame on the Congress government led by Indira Gandhi and the state’s DMK government, headed by the late M. Karunanidhi, for surrendering the Katchatheevu islet in the Palk Strait to Sri Lanka in 1974.In an effort to criticize the ruling DMK and its Congress allies in the INDIA Bloc, the Governor argued that the transfer of Katchatheevu has directly contributed to the difficulties faced by Indian fishermen, who are often attacked by the Sri Lankan navy for allegedly crossing the International Maritime Boundary Line and fishing in Sri Lankan waters.

He suggested that instead of politicizing the issue and blaming the Union Government, the DMK should take a more constructive approach, noting, “Ultimately, the party currently in power in the state is equally accountable for the 1974 agreement as an ally of the then-Central Government.”

“These fishermen are victims of a deeply flawed agreement from 1974 that disregarded their livelihood concerns. The governments in both Delhi and Chennai committed a serious injustice by stripping our fishermen of their traditional fishing rights around Katchatheevu,” Ravi wrote in a post on the Raj Bhavan’s official X account. “Since that time, our fishing community has faced ongoing hardships, with fishermen being arrested and their boats seized by Sri Lankan authorities. This persisting issue warrants a lasting solution,” he emphasized.

Notably, this statement followed his recent visit to Rameswaram, where he engaged with the local fishing community. Earlier, during the 2024 Lok Sabha election campaign, Prime Minister Narendra Modi similarly held the DMK and Congress accountable for the loss of Katchatheevu, which he claimed has left fishermen in a vulnerable position.

According to the Indo-Sri Lanka Accord of 1974, the small, barren islet was ceded to Colombo in exchange for the Wadge Bank, a region rich in marine resources and hydrocarbons located near Kanniyakumari. Katchatheevu hosts St. Antony’s Church, and Tamil Nadu fishermen are permitted access during the annual festival.

Recently, in a crackdown on Indian fishing vessels operating in Sri Lankan waters, the Sri Lankan navy arrested 32 fishermen and confiscated five of their boats. This heightened enforcement has escalated following the recent ascension of Anura Kumara Dissanayake’s government.

In response to the Governor’s comments targeting the DMK, Tamil Nadu Law Minister S. Regupathi urged him to stop spreading narratives about Katchatheevu. “Prime Minister Modi brought this issue up during the Lok Sabha elections, but the BJP faced a significant defeat. Though the PM expresses concern about Katchatheevu being ceded in 1974, he remains silent on China’s occupation of 2,000 sq miles of our territory,” he said, questioning the BJP’s commitment to reclaiming Katchatheevu through legal channels.

He further advised the Governor to refrain from politicizing the matter and suggested he allow BJP president K. Annamalai to take the lead on such issues rather than trying to outdo him.
