TN: Chain Snatching Gang from UP Arrested; Prime Suspect Killed in Encounter

In a dramatic turn of events following a chain-snatching spree in Chennai’s upscale Besant Nagar and Adyar, police apprehended a trio of suspects from northern India. The operation culminated in the early hours of Wednesday when authorities fatally shot 28-year-old mastermind Jaffar Ghulam Hussain from Uttar Pradesh near Taramani. Officers reported that Jaffar was killed after he attempted to evade capture by firing at a special team dispatched to recover stolen jewellery and firearms he had concealed near Taramani Railway Station. The police returned fire in self-defense.

In a scene reminiscent of a film, police detained Jaffar and his accomplice, Suraj alias Marsingh Amjat, also from Uttar Pradesh, at Chennai Airport while they were attempting to escape to Hyderabad. One suspect was deplaned just before takeoff, while the other was intercepted at the airport entrance. A third member of the gang, traveling aboard the Pinakini Express, was apprehended in Nellore.

Following a series of chain snatching incidents targeting women and morning walkers across six locations in the Adyar-Besant Nagar area on Tuesday morning, the Greater Chennai Police launched a comprehensive search operation. Over 100 officers were assigned to review CCTV footage from various sites, leading them to determine that the suspects were en route to the airport after abandoning their motorcycle. The airport authorities, including Air Traffic Control (ATC), were promptly notified.

Upon reaching the airport, police discovered that one of the suspects had already boarded a flight bound for Hyderabad. A team of officers boarded the aircraft to arrest him, while the other suspect was captured at the entrance.

According to police reports, the fatal encounter occurred when Jaffar was being escorted to retrieve the stolen items following preliminary questioning. He drew a weapon from the abandoned motorcycle and opened fire, prompting officers to retaliate in self-defense.

Investigations revealed that Jaffar had over 50 criminal cases filed against him in Mumbai. He and his associates were involved in chain snatching operations facilitated by acquiring a motorcycle through local contacts.

This marks the fourth police encounter in Chennai in just nine months, following the recent eliminations of Thiruvengadam and Kakkathoppu Balaji Seesing Raja, both involved in the murder of the late BSP state president K Armstrong.
