TN Budget: AIADMK Exits Assembly, BJP Boycotts Proceedings

Published

on

The budget session of the Tamil Nadu Assembly kicked off with dramatic events as the opposition AIADMK staged a walkout, while the BJP opted to boycott the session altogether. AIADMK General Secretary and Leader of the Opposition, Edappadi K. Palaniswami (EPS), accused the ruling DMK government of neglecting its duty concerning a liquor scam believed to involve over Rs 1,000 crore in corruption.

Speaking to the media outside the Assembly, EPS called for the resignation of the DMK government, stressing their moral obligation in light of the allegations. He condemned the administration for its lack of transparency, pointing out that despite the ongoing probe, no significant actions had been taken.

EPS also revealed that the opposition filed a no-confidence motion against the Speaker, which allegedly went unaddressed.

Meanwhile, BJP leader and Coimbatore MLA Vanathi Srinivasan spoke to reporters outside the Assembly, clarifying the party’s reason for boycotting the session. She accused the Tamil Nadu government of disrespecting the Constitution by removing the Devanagari rupee symbol from the state budget logo and substituting it with the Tamil rupee symbol.

She contended that while the Tamil symbol is often used in personal context, its official exclusion of the nationally recognized rupee symbol was a calculated decision. According to her, Chief Minister M.K. Stalin and his cabinet had sworn to uphold the Constitution, yet their actions contradicted its principles.

Vanathi Srinivasan further charged that the DMK government was attempting to distract the public from pressing issues, such as the Rs 1,000 crore liquor scam highlighted by the Enforcement Directorate (ED), by focusing on symbolic changes instead of tackling corruption.

The presentation of this year’s budget has been marred by controversy, following CM M.K. Stalin’s decision to replace the Indian rupee symbol (₹) in the official budget logo with the Tamil representation ‘Roo’ (‘ரூ’), derived from the Tamil word for rupee, ‘Roobai.’

On Thursday (March 13), CM Stalin introduced the promotional logo for the budget, which included this new symbol alongside the slogan “Ellarkum Ellam” (Everything for Everyone), highlighting inclusivity. However, this move has attracted significant backlash from opposition leaders and Union Ministers, who accuse the DMK government of fostering linguistic and regional chauvinism.

The Tamil Nadu budget session began with Finance Minister Thangam Thenarasu presenting the budget, but the AIADMK’s walkout and the BJP’s boycott signal that the days ahead may be contentious and fraught with disagreement.
