Mangaluru : A 54-year-old man, who had been absconding for nearly six years after being convicted in a fake passport case, has been arrested by a team led by the Mangaluru North ACP.

The accused has been identified as Vellayudhan, a resident of Bevinje in Kasaragod district, Kerala.

The case dates back to June 22, 2010, when Vellayudhan allegedly attempted to travel abroad from Mangaluru International Airport using a fake passport. Immigration Officer K.M. Chandrashekar detained him and handed him over to the Bajpe Police.

Based on the complaint, Bajpe Police registered a case under Sections 419, 420, 468 read with Section 34 of the IPC and Sections 12(1)(b), (d) and (e) of the Passport Act, 1967.

After completing the investigation, the police filed a charge sheet before the court. The Sessions Court convicted Vellayudhan and sentenced him to one year and six months in prison on December 1, 2020.

Vellayudhan later approached the Karnataka High Court through Criminal Revision Petition No. 104/2021. However, the High Court rejected his petition.

Following the dismissal of his plea, he remained absconding and could not be taken into custody.

After nearly six years, the Mangaluru North ACP-led team traced and apprehended Vellayudhan on October 8, 2026. He was subsequently handed over to Bajpe Police for further legal action.

Kasaragod: A 30-year-old man died after being struck by lightning in the Delampady gram panchayat limits of Kasaragod on Tuesday evening.

The deceased has been identified as Noufal (30), a resident of Mailankotta in Uyithadukka, near Kuntar in Karadka panchayat.

Noufal had gone to his wife’s house at Balavantadukka near Pandi, around 10 km from his home. At around 7:30 pm on Tuesday, he was struck by lightning during heavy rain and thunderstorms.

He was immediately taken to a hospital for treatment. However, doctors who examined him confirmed that he had died.

Noufal was working at a juice shop in Thiruvananthapuram. He is survived by his wife, Zuhra, and their two children.

A case has been registered at the Adhur police station in connection with the incident.

Moodbidri: Two youths died after the scooty they were travelling on skidded and crashed near the Veeramaruthi Temple at Kotebagilu in Moodbidri on Wednesday evening.

The accident occurred when the youths were travelling from the Shirthady side towards Kotebagilu. The scooty reportedly skidded at a turn near the temple, leaving both riders seriously injured.

The deceased have been identified as 17-year-old Prashwith Hegde, son of Sudhakar from Kotebagilu, and Deekshith Poojary, son of Chandra.

Prashwith Hegde was a student of Jain Pre-University College in Moodbidri. He was rushed to the hospital after the accident but died despite treatment.

Deekshith Poojary was also seriously injured and admitted to a private hospital in Mangaluru. He succumbed to his injuries on Wednesday night.

Deekshith’s family was reportedly staying in a rented house at Kotebagilu. The deaths have left both families in deep grief, with the parents mourning the loss of their children.
