Graeme Smith, former captain of South Africa and newly inducted ICC Hall of Famer, celebrated the Proteas’ historic triumph as they clinched their first ICC men’s trophy in 27 years. He praised the team’s determination and spirit, especially highlighting skipper Temba Bavuma and centurion Aiden Markram, who played vital roles in the five-wicket victory over Australia in the World Test Championship (WTC) final held at Lord’s.

When play resumed on the penultimate day, South Africa needed another 69 runs and started their chase with a score of 213/2. Markram led the charge, while Bavuma added just one run to his overnight total of 66, concluding the significant 144-run third-wicket partnership. The Proteas lost Tristan Stubbs (8) in the first session, but Markram and David Bedingham (21 not out) rallied together, nearly finishing the chase with five sessions to spare.

Markram’s impressive knock of 136 came to an end just when South Africa was close to victory, as Josh Hazlewood took advantage with the second new ball. Wicketkeeper Kyle Verreynne ultimately struck the winning runs, marking South Africa’s first men’s senior ICC title since 1998.

Bavuma, who had been dealing with a hamstring injury since Day 3, was dismissed early on the fourth morning after edging a ball from Pat Cummins. Mitchell Starc added pressure by dismissing Stubbs, but Markram maintained his composure to guide the team to victory.

Smith commended the team’s resilience, noting their comeback from a 75-run deficit in the first innings: “This match has seen numerous highs and lows. South Africa demonstrated tremendous tenacity, bowled well, and fought their way back into contention. Aiden Markram’s innings was exceptional, particularly his partnership with Temba Bavuma.”

Highlighting Bavuma’s determination, Smith remarked: “We shouldn’t overlook his battle with a sore hamstring, prioritizing his country’s success and building that partnership. He has been South Africa’s most dependable batter.”

Markram also received accolades, especially for bouncing back after a first-innings duck. “I had a feeling he would step up in this innings. If South Africa was to succeed, he was the key player. He plays with fluidity, keeping the scoreboard active. His early punches off the back foot signaled he was ready to perform.”

Smith also provided insights on Australia’s tactics: “I believe their bowlers gave it their all. Perhaps Lyon could have bowled wider into the rough. Cummins set a defensive field at times, especially considering Bavuma’s injury; they needed to be more aggressive when 150 runs were still required.”

Nonetheless, Smith praised the South African batters: “Full credit goes to the South Africans. I don’t wish to undermine their performance. Today, particularly with Aiden and Temba, was remarkable.”

Reflecting on his own leadership during a challenging time, Smith acknowledged the team’s progress: “Over the past two to three years, we have worked incredibly hard to rebuild South African cricket. Many had dismissed South Africa before this match. Now, they find themselves on the cusp of defeating a formidable Australian team in a final.”
