Kasaragod: In a rare incident, a thief who had stolen a woman’s mangalsutra in Kasaragod had a change of heart after reading a WhatsApp message and returned the ornament with an apology note nine days later.

The incident took place in Poinachi, Kasaragod district, where Geetha, a resident of Paramba Lakshmi Nivas and wife of retired revenue officer V Damodaran, lost her mangalsutra on August 4. The couple had gone out that day, and upon returning home in the evening, Geetha found that her wedding ornament had been stolen. She immediately filed a complaint at the Melparamba police station.

Following the complaint, the police circulated details of the theft through local WhatsApp groups. On the morning of August 13, as Geetha and her husband were preparing to go to Poinachi town, they were astonished to find the stolen mangalsutra neatly placed on their verandah along with a handwritten note in Malayalam.

The note, signed anonymously with only the nearby locality name “Kundankuli,” expressed deep regret:

“It has been nine days since this chain came into my possession. Initially, I was happy, but every time I held it, I felt uneasy and disturbed. I thought deeply about what to do, and when I read on WhatsApp that it was a wedding mangalsutra with a pendant, I decided no one should suffer because of me. I don’t wish to reveal my identity. Please forgive me for keeping it with me all these days and for the pain it caused.”

The thief chose to remain anonymous, revealing only the area he belonged to.

Expressing surprise at the unexpected act of remorse, Geetha said she was touched that someone who had stolen her most precious ornament had the conscience to return it.

Police officials too described the incident as “extraordinary” and a rare case where community messaging played a crucial role in changing a criminal’s mind.
