Telangana Assembly Approves Resolution Urging Centre to Implement Caste Census
He mentioned having four volumes of the survey, stating he was prepared to present the first three, but sharing the fourth would compromise individual privacy. “The Opposition never inquired. I took the initiative to bring this to the Assembly for discussion… which caste do you claim has been treated unfairly? Who are you trying to incite? Those who neglected to conduct such a survey are criticizing us for executing it,” he remarked, taking a shot at the BRS.
Reddy responded to comparisons made by BRS leaders, including KT Rama Rao, with data from a previous survey conducted by the BRS under K Chandrasekhar Rao. He clarified that the earlier survey estimated the population of Backward Classes (BCs) at 51 percent, with other castes accounting for 21 percent, Scheduled Castes (SCs) at 18 percent, and Scheduled Tribes (STs) at 10 percent. Meanwhile, the Muslim population was reported at 11 percent in the BRS survey, but increased to 12.6 percent in the latest figures. He emphasized that both Hindu and Muslim BC numbers had risen, while the figure for other castes (including Muslims) had decreased, falling from 21 percent in the past survey to 13 percent in the most recent one.
Reddy also called out specific Opposition MLAs and MPs from the BJP and BRS who failed to participate in the survey. He accused the Kalvakuntla family of opting out of the census to avoid revealing their land details, and confirmed their commitment to providing 42 percent reservation to BCs in local elections. In response, KT Rama Rao demanded the immediate introduction of the Bill, resulting in BRS MLAs walking out in protest.
Earlier in the session, the Speaker adjourned the House until 2 pm after Legislative Affairs Minister D Sridhar Babu notified that the Cabinet meeting was still in progress. However, BRS MLAs criticized the Congress government over what they perceived as a misstep.
