Supreme Court to Hear Friday’s Plea Challenging Karnataka’s Ban on ‘Thug Life’ Screening

The Supreme Court has scheduled a hearing for June 13 regarding a petition that contests Karnataka’s “ban” on the screening of “Thug Life,” a film by renowned director Mani Ratnam and superstar Kamal Haasan.

Initially, a bench comprising Justices Prashant Kumar Mishra and Manmohan questioned why the petitioner did not first approach the Karnataka High Court before bringing the matter directly to the Supreme Court.

In response, advocate A. Valan, representing petitioner M. Mahesh Reddy from Bengaluru, explained that the Karnataka High Court had requested an apology from Kamal Haasan.

After further discussion, the Supreme Court agreed to address the case on Friday.

The controversy ignited during the film’s audio launch when Kamal Haasan remarked that “Kannada is born out of Tamil,” which provoked a strong backlash in Karnataka. Following the uproar, the Karnataka High Court recommended that the actor-politician issue an apology, a request he has declined. Consequently, the film’s release in the state has been indefinitely postponed.

Last week, Kamal Haasan addressed the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce, clarifying that the dispute surrounding his comments on the origins of the Kannada language stemmed from a misunderstanding. He reiterated his stance against the supremacy of any one language over another.

Despite the ongoing controversy, “Thug Life” remains one of the most anticipated Tamil films of the year. This project marks a reunion between Kamal Haasan and Mani Ratnam after nearly four decades since their iconic 1987 film “Nayakan,” which is regarded as a landmark in Indian cinema. The gangster drama boasts a notable cast, including Silambarasan T.R., Trisha, Nasser, Joju George, Abhirami, Ashok Selvan, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Sanya Malhotra, and Ali Fazal.

“Thug Life” is being jointly produced by Raaj Kamal Films International and Mani Ratnam’s Madras Talkies, with distribution handled by Red Giant Movies.
