Supreme Court Grants Interim Bail to Rape Convict Asaram Bapu on Medical Grounds, Imposes Restrictions

In a significant ruling on Tuesday, the Supreme Court granted interim bail to self-styled godman Asaram Bapu, who has been convicted in a 2013 rape case. The court allowed his release on medical grounds until March 31, subject to specific conditions, including a ban on meeting his followers during the period of his bail.
Asaram, whose real name is Asumal Sirumalani Harpalani, was arrested by the Jodhpur Police on August 31, 2013, after a teenage girl accused him of sexual assault at his ashram in Manai village near Jodhpur. The victim, a minor from Shahjahanpur, Uttar Pradesh, was a student at Asaram’s ashram when the alleged assault took place.

The godman, who has a history of heart problems and has suffered a heart attack in the past, presented medical reports citing his deteriorating health as a reason for seeking bail. In its order, the Supreme Court directed that law enforcement agencies be deployed to supervise Asaram during his release to ensure compliance with the conditions set forth.
This decision follows a parole release granted to Asaram on December 28, 2023, which lasted for 17 days. He returned to Jodhpur Jail on January 3, 2024, after completing his parole term.
In April 2018, a Jodhpur court sentenced Asaram Bapu to life imprisonment for the rape of the minor at his ashram. The godman has also been convicted in a separate case by a Gujarat court in January 2023 for raping a Surat-based woman at another of his ashrams in 2013.
Asaram had previously filed a petition seeking suspension of his life sentence, but in August 2023, the Gujarat High Court rejected his plea. Earlier, in 2024, the Supreme Court had sought a response from the Gujarat government on a petition filed by Asaram challenging his sentence.
Asaram’s release on bail, though temporary, has drawn significant attention given the gravity of his convictions and the restrictions imposed by the Supreme Court to prevent any potential influence over his followers.
