Supreme Court Denies Custody of Minor Son to Techie’s Mother, Labels Her a ‘Stranger to the Child’
The Supreme Court on Tuesday refused to grant custody of a four-year-old boy to Anju Devi, the mother of Bengaluru techie Atul Subhash, who died by suicide in December 2024. A bench comprising Justices Bela M. Trivedi and N. Kotiswar Singh observed that Devi was a “stranger to the child” and emphasized that custody matters should be addressed through appropriate legal procedures.
“Sorry to say, but the child is a stranger to the petitioner. If you wish, please visit the child. In case you want the custody of the child, there is a separate procedure,” the bench remarked during the hearing.
The case arose after Subhash, 34, was found hanging at his residence in Munnekolalu, Bengaluru, on December 9, 2024. Subhash allegedly left behind lengthy messages blaming his wife, Nikita Singhania, and her family for his death. An FIR was subsequently filed against Nikita, her mother Nisha Singhania, and her brother Anurag Singhania under Sections 108 (abetment of suicide) and 3(5) (common intention) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023.
Anju Devi filed a habeas corpus petition seeking custody of her grandson, claiming that Subhash’s estranged wife had concealed the child’s whereabouts. During the hearing, Devi’s lawyer, Advocate Kumar Dushyant Singh, argued that a child under six years of age should not be sent to a boarding school. He presented photographs showing Devi interacting with the boy when he was a toddler.
The counsel representing Nikita Singhania informed the court that the child was studying at a boarding school in Haryana. “We will bring the child to Bengaluru. The mother has to remain in Bengaluru to fulfill bail conditions,” the counsel submitted.
The Supreme Court directed that the child be produced in court on the next hearing scheduled for January 20. It also cautioned against media trials influencing judicial decisions.
Earlier this month, a Bengaluru court granted bail to Nikita Singhania, her mother, and her brother in the abetment of suicide case.
Bantwal: Two people, including an autorickshaw driver, were injured after a lorry collided with their vehicle at Jakribettu in Bantwal on Thursday.
The injured have been identified as autorickshaw driver James Martis and passenger Mohammed Sinan. Both suffered minor injuries and are undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Deralakatte.
The autorickshaw was carrying tyres from Bantwal town towards Belthangady. The rear seat had been folded to make space for the tyres. Sinan, who was responsible for transporting the tyres to a bike company, was travelling with the driver.

The accident occurred when the autorickshaw was entering the national highway at Jakribettu. A lorry coming from the Belthangady side reportedly collided with the autorickshaw.
Bantwal traffic police reached the spot and inspected the scene. A case has been registered, and further investigation is underway.
Udupi: A 42-year-old woman who had been evading court proceedings for nearly 17 years has been arrested by the police.
The accused has been identified as Vaneeshree alias Renuka, a resident of Begur Road in Davanagere.
She was wanted in connection with a case registered at the Udupi Town Police Station in 2009.
She had failed to appear before the court and had remained absconding for nearly 17 years.
Acting on the directions of the Manipal Police Inspector, a team of police personnel traced and arrested her in the jurisdiction of the KTJ Nagar Police Station in Davanagere on August 20, 2026.
The police team included HC 40, PC 157 and WPC 368.
The accused was produced before the Principal Civil Judge and JMFC Court in Udupi.
The court remanded her to judicial custody.

She was subsequently lodged in the Mangaluru District Prison.
The case was registered under relevant sections of the Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act.
Ullal: A pedestrian was seriously injured after a car hit him at Talapady in Ullal taluk.
The injured person has been identified as 50-year-old Sharanappa, a resident of Gadag. The incident occurred when Sharanappa was standing on the side of the road.
A Kerala-registered car allegedly hit him while being driven carelessly. Sharanappa suffered serious injuries in the accident.
The Mangaluru South Traffic Police have registered a case regarding the incident. The accident has raised concerns about pedestrian safety in Talapady.
The area does not have a proper service road. Vehicles and trucks are also often parked on the main road.

As a result, pedestrians have very little space to walk safely.
Residents have urged the concerned National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) authorities to take immediate steps to improve road safety in the area.
