Subhash Ghai Shares His Reasons for Leaving Filmmaking, Discussing the Current State of Bollywood

Renowned filmmaker Subhash Ghai has an impressive track record, having directed numerous successful films such as ‘Karz,’ ‘Khalnayak,’ and ‘Taal.’ In a recent interview, Ghai candidly discussed the declining state of Bollywood and the reasons behind his decision to step away from filmmaking. Reflecting on his experiences, he expressed that the art of filmmaking has shifted from a passionate pursuit to merely a job.

Speaking on the Game Changers YouTube channel, Ghai explained the reasons for his departure from the film industry: “I stopped making films because I no longer see the love for cinema—neither in the audience nor in my own team. Everyone seems to be just going through the motions.” He recounted an encounter with a writer he had approached for a script, highlighting how the creative process has become overly transactional. “When I asked a writer to develop a story from my idea, he told me that he would complete it in 15 days, deliver the first draft in just three days, and even insisted on receiving his full payment upfront. He provided me with exact dates for when the story would be ready. I jokingly asked him, ‘Are you making chapatis?’ How can I collaborate with someone who thinks like that? The industry has conditioned him to operate this way.”

Ghai further lamented the loss of creativity within the filmmaking process, stating, “These days, people say, ‘Just send it to me by email, that’s enough.’ Scripts and dialogues are written on WhatsApp now.”

Additionally, he pointed out the scarcity of new stars emerging from the film industry, suggesting that many actors prioritize financial success over genuine artistry. Ghai noted that since the 1980s, only Ranbir Kapoor has achieved star status, while icons from that era, like Salman Khan, Shah Rukh Khan, Akshay Kumar, and Aamir Khan, continue to shine because of the cultural legacy they represent. “In the last decade, no one has become a star except for Ranbir Kapoor,” he remarked.
