Subhash Ghai Declines to Take Credit for the Stardom of Anil Kapoor, Madhuri Dixit, and Jackie Shroff

Acclaimed filmmaker Subhash Ghai, renowned for classics like ‘Karz’, ‘Hero’, ‘Taal’, and ‘Ram Lakhan’, recently humbly refrained from claiming credit for launching the careers of stars such as Anil Kapoor, Jackie Shroff, Madhuri Dixit, and Meenakshi Seshadri. He expressed that these talented actors were always destined for stardom; it was simply fate that united them, allowing them to draw out each other’s best performances.

In a conversation with film expert Komal Nahta on his podcast ‘Game Changers’, Ghai shared his distinctive perspective on collaborating with some of Bollywood’s finest talents. When asked about his process for elevating actors to stardom, Ghai responded with humility, stating, “I didn’t make them stars; their destiny did. Fate brought us together, and I recognized their genuine talent. They were eager learners, honest, and authentic, which is why I encouraged them to work together, whether it was Jackie, Madhuri, Anil, or Sanju.”

He highlighted that his approach is centered on an actor’s willingness to evolve and learn. Authenticity and a desire for growth play a crucial role in his selection process, overshadowing mere talent. “The most important thing for me is to find someone who wants to learn and possesses the ambition to succeed. As a director, I can nurture their talent,” he noted.

Earlier, Ghai unveiled the inspiration behind the title of his memoir, ‘Karma’s Child: The Story of Indian Cinema’. On Instagram, he shared a nostalgic photo with esteemed writer Gulzar and reflected on Gulzar’s words regarding the book. He recounted, “Gulzar saab expressed that the title symbolizes how your instinctive talent allowed you to create timeless classics. It just unfolds naturally.”

He continued, “It reflects your own karma and courage to thrive as a filmmaker for 40 years. I felt deeply touched by his affection and support when he launched my book at the Mumbai Film Festival. Thank you, Gulzar sahab. I remain a student.”

‘Karma’s Child: The Story of Indian Cinema’s Ultimate Showman’ was officially launched at the 55th edition of the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) held in Goa.
