SRK Asks an Old Friend for the Title ‘Dunki’

Rajkumar Hirani’s 2023 film ‘Dunki,’ starring Shah Rukh Khan, addresses the critical issue of illegal immigration. The film also features Taapsee Pannu and Vicky Kaushal in prominent roles, skillfully combining humor with the complexities of the subject matter. Interestingly, there’s a backstory behind the film’s quirky title. Actor and filmmaker Akashdeep Sabir originally held the copyright for ‘Dunki.’ In a recent podcast interview, he discussed how the title transitioned to Hirani’s film.

During a conversation with Lehren Retro, Akashdeep shared that the theme of illegal immigration piqued his interest during the pandemic. He learned about the difficult routes illegal immigrants often take to reach America and subsequently commissioned a writer to create four seasons for a Netflix series. For this project, he secured titles such as ‘The Donkey Route,’ ‘The Road to Death,’ and ‘Dunki.’ Coincidentally, Rajkumar Hirani was also working on a similar project with Shah Rukh at the same time and chose to use ‘Dunki’ as their title, unaware that Akashdeep owned the copyright.

Reflecting on the situation, he recounted, “Rajkumar Hirani was thinking along the same lines. When Shah Rukh inquired about the film’s title, Rajkumar said ‘Dunki.’ Shah Rukh suggested that they apply for copyright, assuming the title was unclaimed. That’s when Rajkumar informed him, ‘No, Akash has it.’ Once Shah Rukh learned my name, he said, ‘Don’t worry, I’ll talk to him.’” Following this, SRK called Akashdeep, introducing himself with, “Hey, this is Shah Rukh.” Initially, Akashdeep dismissed it as a prank call while working in his studio.

Not long after, SRK called him a second time. “He was his usual polite self, saying, ‘I think I called at the wrong time. Save my number; I’m not on WhatsApp, only on SMS. Whenever you’re free, let me know, and I’ll call you.’ At that moment, I realized, ‘Oh no, I assumed this was a prank.’ He then asked, ‘Do you still like to stay up until 5 in the morning?’ I replied, ‘Yes.’ He invited me for dinner and inquired about my family. During our second meeting, he discussed the Dunki title and requested that I let him have it. I said, ‘Of course, take it.’”

Following this, SRK arranged a meeting with Akashdeep, Hirani, and the film’s other stakeholders. They shared scripts and determined that there were no similarities or conflicts of interest. Akashdeep noted, “Afterward, his office reached out to discuss payment. I told them, ‘Take the title; I wasn’t planning to use it anyway. Why would I ask for money from Shah Rukh Khan?’” He praised Shah Rukh, stating, “To this day, he remains a true gentleman, incredibly smart. He absolutely deserves all his success.”

Viral Video: A heartwarming incident involving Indian cricketer Sanju Samson has gone viral on social media.

The incident took place when two friends were riding a bike from Kadampazhippuram to Mangalamkunnu ground to play cricket in the evening. While passing the Punjappadam school bus stop, they noticed a newly parked Range Rover car on the roadside.
