Shubman and Rohit Edge Closer to Babar’s No. 1 ODI Ranking

Published

on

Shubman Gill has ascended to the No. 2 position in the ICC ODI batting rankings and is now just a step away from overtaking former Pakistan captain Babar Azam at the top. Gill narrowed the gap with Babar by scoring fifties in both of the opening ODIs against England.

With a rating of 781, Gill trails Babar Azam, who is currently at 786, by a mere five points. However, Babar isn’t the only competitor for the top spot, as Indian captain Rohit Sharma, who scored a brilliant century in the second ODI against England and now has 32 centuries to his name, sits in third place, just three points shy of Babar.

With merely a week left until the ICC Champions Trophy kicks off in Pakistan and the UAE, the competition for the top spot among ODI batters is heating up ahead of the eight-team tournament.

All three—Rohit, Gill, and Babar—will be in action on Wednesday. Unfortunately for Rohit, he won’t be able to enhance his rank further before the Champions Trophy as he was out for just 1 run in the final ODI against England at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

Former India captain Virat Kohli fell from fourth to sixth place after missing the first ODI due to a minor injury and failing to perform significantly in the second match. However, he made a comeback with a half-century in the third ODI on Wednesday.

Notable players like Fakhar Zaman (13th), Kane Williamson (29th), Jos Buttler (38th), Devon Conway (tied for 40th), and Joe Root (51st) have re-entered the ODI batting rankings following recent performances in 50-over matches. Competition remains fierce in the bowling rankings as well.

In the bowlers’ category, a slim margin of just 18 rating points separates the top five ODI bowlers: Rashid Khan, Maheesh Theekshana, Bernard Scholtz, Shaheen Afridi, and Kuldeep Yadav. Meanwhile, Indian players Ravindra Jadeja (11th) and Mohammed Shami (13th) are just outside the top 10 after their recent performances against England.

Mohammad Nabi from Afghanistan continues to hold a slim lead in the ODI all-rounders rankings, while New Zealand’s captain, Mitchell Santner, has made a notable leap, rising two spots to seventh ahead of the Champions Trophy.
