Shilpa Shetty recently reflected on one of Bollywood’s most memorable moments: the shocking climax of ‘Baazigar’ (1993), where Shah Rukh Khan’s character unexpectedly pushes her off a building. This pivotal scene remains a topic of discussion among film enthusiasts, and she had to perform it multiple times, making it one of the most challenging sequences of her career.

During a film festival, the actress shared her feelings about filming this intense moment, admitting it was quite nerve-wracking for her as an industry newcomer.

Shilpa recalled being new to filmmaking and lacking knowledge about acting techniques. “I was like a student learning on set. Coming from a South Indian background, I wasn’t fluent in Hindi, which made me even more anxious. While filming ‘Aag’, I even asked Kader Khan to help me learn Urdu, starting from scratch,” she revealed.

Discussing the iconic fall scene, Shilpa mentioned that action director Akbar Bhai insisted on reshooting it five times to achieve the perfect shot. “Back then, there were no VFX or advanced CGI to create the illusion. I had to physically act like I was falling while the building was actually moving behind me,” she explained.

She also talked about the physical toll the scene took on her, saying, “I was in a harness, which left me with a scar on my hip that lasted nearly 10 years. The filmmakers felt we could improve upon it. I’ve ‘died’ in that scene at least 15 times,” she laughed.

The scene’s impact was heightened by its bold narrative choice. “It was unusual to see a hero push an innocent heroine off a building. Shah Rukh Khan delivered a brilliant performance, and ‘Baazigar’ was truly ahead of its time,” Shilpa remarked. She emphasized that filmmaking in the 90s was quite different from today: “Movies back then were made with genuine passion rather than purely for commercial gain.”

Directed by Abbas-Mustan, ‘Baazigar’ is a crime thriller that played a crucial role in launching the careers of Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, and Shilpa Shetty. The film, inspired by Ira Levin’s novel ‘A Kiss Before Dying’, tells the story of a young man seeking revenge through multiple identities. Shah Rukh’s portrayal of an anti-hero was groundbreaking, earning him critical acclaim and establishing his status as a leading star in Bollywood.

Upon its Diwali release on November 12, 1993, the film became a massive success. Created on a budget of ₹4 crore, ‘Baazigar’ grossed an impressive ₹32 crore worldwide, making it the fourth highest-grossing Hindi film of the year. Over the years, it has attained cult status for its gripping storyline.
