Shattering Stereotypes: Female Bikers Make Their Debut at The Statesman Vintage & Classic Car Rally

Published

on

In its 58th edition, The Statesman Vintage and Classic Car Rally made headlines with the participation of female bikers, who roared alongside classic automobiles through the streets of Delhi. This event shattered stereotypes and redefined the essence of being a rider in India.

The annual rally, celebrating automotive heritage, witnessed an uplifting moment as women bikers—from both seasoned veterans to those new to riding—displayed not only their machines but also their passion and resolve for the open road.

For many, biking transcends mere hobby; it embodies a lifestyle infused with independence and a challenge to societal norms. Geeta Batra, an experienced biker, reflected on her journey, stating, “I began riding four to five years ago, transitioning from lightweight bikes to my first serious motorcycle. Since then, I’ve never looked back.”

Another rider, Akansha Raghav, who has been biking for four and a half years, expressed how deeply biking has become part of her identity: “The emotions I experience while riding—freedom, confidence, and empowerment—are unparalleled. Many women wish to follow this passion but lack guidance. We’ve formed a network to provide support and mentorship.”

This thriving community actively promotes women’s participation in biking. “The men in our group uplift us; they’re not here to hinder our progress. Society often discourages women from pursuing unconventional interests like biking, but we are here to demonstrate that nothing is impossible for a woman,” Raghav emphasized.

Among the inspirational participants was Shruti, a 60-year-old former banker who embraced serious biking post-retirement. She shared, “Growing up, I was often labeled as delicate, a perception that lingered with me. However, biking empowered me to realize my strength, both mentally and physically. Riding has become my form of meditation; it’s just me, my machine, and the road.”

While some riders enjoyed familial support, others faced societal pressures. Jasmeet Dhodi, a seasoned biker, encouraged those struggling to find acceptance: “I was fortunate that my parents backed me, but many women aren’t as lucky. To them, I advise: persist in communicating your dreams. Change takes time, but perseverance makes it possible.”

Their involvement in The Statesman Vintage Rally was more than simply a ride; it was a powerful statement. These women are not only dismantling barriers in a traditionally male-dominated sphere but also serving as an inspiration for a new generation to pursue their passions unapologetically.

As they prepare for their next expedition—a challenging 20-day ride across the rugged terrains of Ladakh—they send a resounding message to other women: “Prioritize yourself, pursue what fulfills you, and watch as the universe aligns in your favor.”
