Shabana Azmi Reveals the Real Story Behind Kangana and Javed’s Reconciliation: “She Offered an Apology”

Bollywood is never short of drama, and the latest chapter involves the resolution of the protracted legal conflict between lyricist Javed Akhtar and actress Kangana Ranaut. Although the two reached a truce last month, veteran actress Shabana Azmi is not pleased with how the media represented the settlement.

So, what transpired?

Let’s take a trip back to 2020—Javed Akhtar initiated legal proceedings against Kangana Ranaut, alleging that she had defamed him by involving his name in the Sushant Singh Rajput case. Akhtar claimed that Kangana made public statements that were not only untrue but also harmful to his reputation on both national and international stages. Kangana responded by filing a counter-complaint, accusing him of extortion and violating her privacy.

Fast forward to February 2025, and the case has finally concluded; however, Shabana Azmi had an issue with the media’s portrayal of the resolution.

While headlines proclaimed a “mutual settlement” between Javed and Kangana, Azmi clarified that it was anything but mutual. In an interview with Bollywood Hungama, she revealed that Javed Akhtar was not seeking financial reparation from Kangana—his sole request was for a written apology. “They did not ask for monetary compensation; they only wanted her written apology. The victory belongs to him and his lawyer Jay Bhardwaj,” she stated.

She expressed confusion over why the media failed to emphasize this vital aspect. “I’m puzzled as to why the press portrayed it as a mutual settlement without mentioning that he was seeking a written apology, or why he fought the case for four and a half years,” she added.

As part of the agreement, Kangana retracted her previous statements and issued an official apology. In a statement filed with the court, she said, “The statements I made during the interview on July 19, 2020, and afterwards were a result of misunderstanding. I hereby unconditionally withdraw all statements made by me and undertake not to repeat them in the future. I apologize for the inconvenience caused to Mr. Javed Akhtar, who is one of the senior-most figures in the film industry, and I hold him in the highest regard.”

In response, Akhtar agreed to dismiss his complaint.

After the settlement, Kangana surprised everyone by sharing a joyful photo with Javed Akhtar from the court. But that wasn’t all—she even hinted at a potential professional collaboration with the lyricist! “Today, Javed ji and I have resolved our legal issue (defamation case) through mediation. Javed ji has shown great kindness and grace. He has also agreed to write songs for my upcoming directorial project,” Kangana announced.
