Security Forces Eliminate 16 Maoists in Intense Clash in Chhattisgarh
The operation was a collaborative effort involving the District Reserve Guard (DRG) and the Central Reserve Police Force’s (CRPF) elite CoBRA unit, and it unfolded in the Gogunda hills near Uppamapalli, within the jurisdiction of Kerlapal police station. Two members of the DRG suffered minor injuries and are currently receiving medical care.
This anti-Maoist mission commenced on March 28, following accurate intelligence regarding armed cadre movements in the dense forest. As security forces approached a suspected Maoist hideout early Saturday morning, they faced heavy gunfire, resulting in an extended firefight that led to the deaths of 16 Maoists.
Officials estimate that between 30 to 40 insurgents were present at the scene, with some managing to escape. A significant cache of weapons, including AK-47s, SLRs, and INSAS rifles, was recovered from the encounter site, with precise inventory checks ongoing.
This latest engagement represents the second major success for security forces in the past ten days; on March 20, an operation along the Bijapur-Dantewada border resulted in the elimination of 30 Maoists, albeit with the loss of one DRG soldier. This earlier mission also yielded a substantial haul of weaponry, including AK-47 rifles and grenades.
The latest operation serves to reinforce security forces’ control over the region and underscores the government’s intensified commitment to eradicating left-wing extremism in Chhattisgarh.
Notably, Union Home Minister Amit Shah recently reiterated the government’s dedication to eradicating the Maoist insurgency, stating, “India will be Maoist-free before March 31 next year,” and emphasizing the dual strategy of aggressive counter-insurgency and rehabilitation for surrendering militants. The operation in Sukma is seen as an important step toward realizing this goal.
In the wake of the encounter, additional security reinforcements have been sent to the region, with increased aerial surveillance and expanded search operations within a five-kilometer radius to locate any remaining insurgents. A heightened alert has been issued across the Bastar division to guard against potential retaliatory actions by Maoists. Forensic teams are also being deployed to assess evidence collected from the encounter site.
This crackdown coincides with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s upcoming visit to Chhattisgarh in April, where he is expected to review security measures and highlight the government’s development initiatives in areas affected by Maoism.
With ongoing counterinsurgency operations yielding significant results, security forces are progressively asserting their control over Maoist-impacted regions. The latest encounter fortifies the government’s resolve to dismantle the Maoist network and establish lasting stability in Chhattisgarh’s conflict-ridden districts.
