Security Enhanced in Sambhal Following Police Ban on Neja Mela

Published

on

Security measures in the city have been reinforced following the police department’s decision to prohibit the Neja Mela, which commemorates Sayyed Salar Masood Ghazi, a military commander under Mohammad Ghaznavi. Authorities cited historical accounts that describe Salar Masood as a looter and murderer, asserting that celebrations in his name could not be sanctioned.

Recently, the Neja Mela Committee announced preparations to kick off the fair on March 18 by erecting a pole in the designated mela ground. However, on Monday, the administration responded by filling the pit with cement, effectively closing it for good.

A significant police presence has been stationed in the area, with Additional SP (ASP) Srischandra and CO Anuj Chaudhary leading a flag march alongside RRF and PAC personnel. This action was taken amid a substantial deployment of PAC and police forces in the main market area adjacent to the Kotwali. ASP Srischandra stated on Tuesday that any miscreants would be dealt with firmly, and the police are utilizing drones to monitor the situation.

“The fair will not be allowed in honor of thieves and murderers. If anyone attempts to proceed with the fair, legal action will be taken against them,” the ASP emphasized. The Neja fair, organized by the Neja Committee at Chaman Sarai in Sambhal, was scheduled to take place this year at various locations on March 25, 26, and 27.

ASP Srischandra further reminded that Mahmud Ghaznavi was known for looting the Somnath temple and that his commander, Sayyed Salar Masood Ghazi, is historically associated with such acts. Concerns have been raised by members of other communities, leading to apprehension about potential disturbances to law and order, hence the decision to prohibit the Neja fair.

Shahid Hussain Masudi, chairman of the Neja Committee, claimed that the Neja fair has been celebrated for nearly a thousand years, but this year it will not take place due to police refusal based on law and order concerns. He reiterated that the fair honors Syed Salar Masood Ghazi.

Traditionally, on the first day, the Neja fair is held at the tomb of Hazrat Bhole Shah Bhole in Shahbazpur Sura Nagla. The following day, it proceeds to the tomb of Hazrat Ahmed Shah within the municipal premises, and on the third day, the fair takes place on the Badal Gome along Hasanpur Road. Prayers are offered at all three locations during these festivities.
