SC Calls Mahakumbh Stampede an Unfortunate Incident

Published

on

The Supreme Court described the stampede that occurred on January 29 during the Mahakumbh 2025 in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, as an “unfortunate incident.” On Monday, the court declined to consider a public interest litigation (PIL) urging the establishment of safety measures and guidelines for the pilgrims attending the event from all over the country.
Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna, leading a bench that included Justice Sanjay Kumar, advised the PIL petitioner, advocate Vishal Tiwari, to take the matter to the High Court. “It is an unfortunate incident, and it is indeed a matter of concern, but please approach the High Court,” he stated.

Senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi, representing the Uttar Pradesh government, informed the bench that a judicial commission has already been formed to investigate the incident. Rohatgi also noted that a similar petition had been filed in the Allahabad High Court, prompting the bench to suggest that the PIL petitioner pursue his case there.

The petitioner requested that VIP movements should not endanger the safety of ordinary devotees, emphasizing the need for maximum space for both entry and exit for the attendees at Mahakumbh. Furthermore, the PIL requested that the Uttar Pradesh government provide a status report regarding the stampede incident.
