“Save Me” Text to Boyfriend Leads to Probe, Reveals Honour Killing in Gujarat

Published

on

Ahmedabad: A late-night Instagram message — just two words, “Save me” — turned into a tragic prelude to a murder in Banaskantha, Gujarat. Hours after sending the message to her boyfriend, 18-year-old Chandrika Chaudhary was found dead at her home.

Initially believed to be a natural death, the case took a darker turn when police investigations revealed it was, in fact, an honour killing. Officers allege Chandrika’s father, Sedhabhai Patel, and her uncle, Shivabhai Patel, were behind the crime. The uncle is in custody, while her father remains at large, confirmed Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Suman Nala.

Chandrika had been in a relationship with Harish Chaudhary, a match her family disapproved of. They had arranged for her to marry someone else, but she was unwilling. On the night of June 24, fearing for her life, she sent Harish a desperate plea:

“Come and take me away. My family will force me to marry. If I refuse, they will kill me. Save me.”

A few hours later, her lifeless body was discovered. At first, her death was treated as a suicide. However, Harish, unconvinced by the circumstances, lodged a complaint, insisting she had been murdered.

ASP Nala revealed that Chandrika had briefly run away with Harish days earlier, but police traced them, and she was sent back after her family filed a missing person’s report. Harish later filed a habeas corpus petition, but before the court date arrived, news broke of her death.

The family presented a death certificate claiming natural causes, but Harish pressed for an inquiry. Police soon noted troubling inconsistencies: the family had not called a doctor, the cremation was rushed, and even Chandrika’s brother in Palanpur was not informed in time.

Investigators say her father and uncle had resolved to kill her that night if she continued to defy them. They allegedly executed a three-step plan: sedating her until she fell asleep, strangling her, and then staging the scene to resemble a suicide. Witnesses who saw the body overnight thought she had hanged herself, but by morning, the family changed the story to “natural death.”

Forensic evidence, phone records, and contradictory statements confirmed it was a premeditated killing. A murder case has been registered at Tharad police station, with two arrests made so far. The search for Chandrika’s father is ongoing.
