Sandeep Reddy Vanga on Bollywood’s Critique of ‘Animal’ and Praise for Ranbir Kapoor

Published

on

Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s contentious film, ‘Animal,’ featuring Ranbir Kapoor, has proven to be a box office hit. Despite its commercial success, the movie has faced criticism from various critics and industry figures for its portrayal of violence and toxic masculinity. The cast also includes Rashmika Mandanna, Triptii Dimri, and Anil Kapoor in significant roles. In a recent interview, Vanga remarked that, even as Bollywood condemned the film, they praised Ranbir Kapoor’s performance.During his appearance on Komal Nahta’s YouTube channel, Game Changers, Vanga addressed the inconsistencies within the Hindi film industry. When questioned about the backlash against ‘Animal,’ he noted this disparity, stating, “I’ll tell you one thing: the film industry folks who heavily criticized ‘Animal’ all praised Ranbir, saying, ‘But Ranbir toh todd diya (Ranbir smashed it).’ I’m not jealous of Ranbir, but I just don’t comprehend this discrepancy. It seems they want to work with him. Kyunki agar Ranbir ko bolenge toh… (Because if they say something to Ranbir then…)”

He continued, “It’s easier for them to criticize me since I’m new here. Filmmakers create a film every couple of years, but actors appear in multiple films each year. So, they tend not to speak ill of those they collaborate with more frequently.”

When asked if he felt like an outsider in Bollywood, Vanga dismissed that idea, stating, “No, I don’t subscribe to the insider-outsider narrative. I’ve never felt like an outsider. There is a clear faction and a disparity, but this happens when a newcomer joins your established circle. It’s naturally uncomfortable at first,” he explained.

Vanga also revealed that an actor associated with ‘Kabir Singh’ was denied opportunities due to that association, highlighting the industry’s double standards. He challenged others to hold major stars like Ranbir Kapoor, Rashmika Mandanna, or Triptii Dimri to the same scrutiny.

Looking ahead, the film is set to receive a sequel titled ‘Animal Park,’ and Vanga is planning a trilogy. At the Red Sea Film Festival, Ranbir Kapoor shared his thoughts on the upcoming installments, saying, “Sandeep Reddy Vanga, the director, has flirted with ideas for how he wants to progress the story over three parts. The second installment is called ‘Animal Park.’ We’ve been exchanging concepts from the first film and discussing how to take the story forward. It’s very exciting because I’ll have the chance to play both the antagonist and the protagonist. This project is intriguing, especially with such an original director at the helm, and I’m thrilled to be a part of it.”

FWICE Bans Pakistani Artists in Wake of Pahalgam Attack

Published

on

The recent terror attack in Pahalgam, which claimed the lives of at least 26 innocent people, has left the nation deeply unsettled. In response to this tragedy, Ashoke Dubey, General Secretary of the Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE), announced a ban on Pakistani artists working in India. This decision follows FWICE’s call for a boycott of Fawad Khan’s film “Abir Gulaal,” co-starring Vaani Kapoor, which was scheduled for release in May.

In an interview with ANI, Dubey emphasized that any Indian national supporting Pakistani artists would face consequences. He stated, “This is a matter of national interest; the nation comes first. The ongoing attacks, including the recent incident in Pahalgam targeting our tourists, are disgraceful. We have issued a press release declaring that members found collaborating with Pakistani artists or technicians will be subject to action and prohibited from working with them.”

Dubey further mentioned in a letter to the Information and Broadcasting Minister that a notification should be issued to enforce strict measures. “If any member from India collaborates with Pakistani artists, we propose that a treason case be filed against them, compelling them to think twice before proceeding with such actions.”

Previously, FWICE had called for a ban on Fawad Khan’s “Abir Gulaal.” In light of growing calls for a boycott, sources within the Information and Broadcasting Ministry have confirmed that the film will not be released in India.

Delhi High Court Orders AR Rahman to Pay 2 Crores in ‘Veera Raja Veera’ Copyright Dispute

Published

on

The Delhi High Court has ordered renowned music composer AR Rahman and the producers of the film ‘Ponniyin Selvan 2’ to deposit ₹2 crores with the court due to a copyright dispute involving the Junior Dagar brothers’ classical rendition of ‘Shiv Stuti.’

Justice Prathiba M Singh issued an interim ruling on April 25, siding with the Junior Dagar brothers. She emphasized that, from a listener’s perspective, the essence of Rahman’s song ‘Veera Raja Veera’ goes beyond mere inspiration, showing significant similarities in notes, emotions, and overall impact to ‘Shiv Stuti.’ The judge concluded that the new track infringes on the rights of the original creators of the homage to Lord Shiva.

Furthermore, the court mandated that a credit slide for the Junior Dagar brothers—Late Ustad N. Faiyazuddin Dagar and Late Ustad Zahiruddin Dagar—be included in the film on all streaming and online platforms. The court also awarded ₹2 lakh in costs to the family of the late artists.

Ustad Faiyaz Wasifuddin Dagar, son of Faiyazuddin Dagar and nephew of Zahiruddin Dagar, claimed in the lawsuit that he holds the copyright for all original compositions of the Junior Dagar brothers, including ‘Shiv Stuti,’ which he argued was unlawfully infringed upon.

The court stated, “Ultimately, this court holds that the contested song is not merely inspired by the composition ‘Shiva Stuti’ but is, in fact, identical with only the lyrics changed. While modern elements may have been added, the fundamental musical structure remains the same, leading to infringement of the rights associated with ‘Shiva Stuti.’” Consequently, the court ordered AR Rahman, Madras Talkies, and Lyca Productions to deposit ₹2 crores, which will be held in a fixed deposit pending the lawsuit’s final outcome.

The ruling acknowledged potential harm to the creative and moral rights of the original composers, who are deceased. It further noted that “Defendant number 1 (Rahman), who enjoys international fame, initially failed to acknowledge the plaintiff’s work. When approached, the recognition was given, though reluctantly. It’s also significant that the singers of the song are disciples of the plaintiff, highlighting the deep ties between ‘Shiva Stuti’ and ‘Veera Raja Veera.’”

Conversely, the defense argued that ‘Shiv Stuti’ is rooted in the traditional dhrupad genre and lies within the public domain. They contended that the singing style and composition were not original, hence not eligible for copyright protection.
