Sambit Patra Holds Meeting with the Governor of Manipur

Published

on

On Wednesday, BJP’s North-East in-charge, Sambit Patra, met with Manipur’s Governor, Ajay Kumar Bhalla, at Raj Bhawan. The discussion spanned roughly 50 minutes, occurring at a pivotal moment for the state. Although Patra did not speak to the press afterward, sources suggest that their talks focused on the current unrest and possible political shifts within the BJP-led administration.

After meeting with the Governor, Patra proceeded to engage with BJP MLAs and ministers at Hotel Imphal, continuing discussions that began on February 10. These consultations have been tailored to include key political figures.

Attendees of the discussions included state ministers and legislators such as Sapam Ranjan, K. Ibomcha, Sheikh Noorul Hassain, Sapam Kunjeswar, and Minister Th. Biswajit. While specifics remain confidential, the conversations reportedly concentrated on strategies to restore stability in the state, which has been affected by ethnic strife, and to address the concerns of party members.
Following the 2022 Assembly elections in Manipur, the BJP has faced internal strife, with growing factionalism complicating its dynamics. The ethnic violence that erupted last year has further strained governance in the northeastern state, leading to ongoing calls for a more assertive security response and enhanced rehabilitation initiatives.
The violence in Manipur has resulted in over 200 fatalities and displaced thousands, challenging the government’s ability to uphold law and order. The opposition, led by the Congress and various regional parties, has consistently criticized the BJP for its perceived ineffectiveness in managing the crisis. Additionally, demands from Kuki-Zo groups for a separate administration have added further complexity to the situation.
Sambit Patra’s series of meetings indicates that the BJP is actively reassessing its strategies moving forward in Manipur, though it remains unclear whether this will result in leadership changes, administrative reform, or renewed peace initiatives.
