Ruling and Opposition Members Clash Over Governor’s Address in Himachal Assembly

Published

on

A heated exchange unfolded between the ruling party and the opposition during a discussion on the motion of thanks presented by the government in response to the Governor’s address in the Himachal Pradesh Assembly on Wednesday.

The opposition members sought to underscore the government’s shortcomings, while the ruling party touted its accomplishments.

During the debate, BJP MLA Satpal Singh Satti challenged the Congress government regarding its promises, specifically critiquing the phased disbursement of Rs 1500 to women, which he found to be perplexing. He noted that the initial promise was for all women to receive Rs 1500 directly in their accounts.

Satti further remarked on the cow dung procurement situation, drawing attention to the incomplete fulfillment of the government’s pledge to purchase milk at Rs 100 per liter, suggesting that the state government was overstating the progress they had made.

Pointing out that even a minister had described the Congress party as “paralyzed,” he claimed the government was failing to function effectively. He questioned whether purchasing cow dung was truly the government’s responsibility and criticized the deteriorating condition of state roads, stating that funds for necessary repairs were lacking.

Satti expressed concerns about the lack of basic utilities, such as pipes for tap installations. He also inquired about the locations of the so-called Adarsh Health Institutions and condemned illegal mining, noting the destruction of the Swan River and the infiltration of the mining mafia from Punjab.

He accused the government of closing the state treasury and shutting down 1400 institutions, calling this the Congress government’s legacy. He highlighted that the Congress administration had incurred a debt of Rs 30,000 crores in just two years.

In response, Agriculture Minister Chandra Kumar noted that the people of the state had given the Congress government a five-year mandate, asserting that they would fulfill all promises made during this term and gain re-election. He attributed the state’s economic troubles to the previous BJP government’s mismanagement through overdrafts and stated the Chief Minister was actively addressing these issues.

Kumar claimed that the government had already fulfilled its initial guarantee regarding Old Pension Scheme (OPS) in its first cabinet meeting and mentioned that Rs 1.40 crore worth of cow dung had been procured for creating manure, which would be packaged for public distribution.

In response to the Agriculture Minister’s remarks, Leader of Opposition Jai Ram Thakur supported Satpal Satti’s critiques, questioning how many Adarsh Health Institutions had actually been established across the state. He urged the government to be sensitive to public distress, highlighting that state employees were not receiving their salaries and retirees were also waiting for pensions. Thakur continued to assert that PG doctors were not receiving stipends, calling for the government to refrain from making misleading claims. He emphasized that the opposition would continue to voice concerns regardless of attempts to silence them.
