Rising Tensions in Karnataka: Congress and BJP-JD(S) Clash Over Corruption Allegations

Published

on

An intriguing political clash is unfolding in Karnataka between the ruling Congress party and the opposition, which includes the BJP and JD (S). The BJP has accused the Congress of involvement in gold smuggling, while the Karnataka government is intensifying its actions against BJP and JD (S) leaders concerning previous allegations of corruption.

The BJP has seized upon the Starlet Smuggling Saga involving actress Ranya Rao as ammunition against Congress, suggesting that “two Congress ministers” were part of the gold smuggling operations. In response, the Congress has escalated its investigation into former Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai and his government over the alleged “40 percent commission” scam, with the inquiry committee presenting its findings to the government. Furthermore, the state revenue department has initiated reclamation proceedings against former Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy related to alleged land encroachment.

Recently, the revenue department issued notices to the Union Minister concerning an old case of land encroachment in Ramanagaram. Kumaraswamy has adamantly denied any misconduct, asserting that he purchased the land four decades ago and has always acted legally. He characterizes the allegations as a politically motivated attack by the Congress government, promising to contest the matter in court. Despite the notices, he claims he has received no official communication pertaining to the reclamation efforts and expressed concern about the implications for ordinary citizens facing similar harassment.

The revenue officials have commenced a survey of the disputed property in Kethaganahalli, with Kumaraswamy emphasizing his clean record as a two-time Chief Minister, stating he has never engaged in land encroachment or illegal activities. He pointed out that legal protocols necessitate a 15-day notice before eviction, yet he has reportedly received nothing.

In a pointed response, Karnataka’s Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar questioned why Kumaraswamy would fear investigation if he has nothing to hide. Kumaraswamy faces accusations of encroaching on government land in both Bidadi and Kethaganahalli. On the same day, notices were issued to him as part of the land reclamation operations. Shivakumar remarked that if Kumaraswamy and his family were innocent of encroachment, they should not be worried.

The statements from Congress leaders, coupled with the government’s actions, reflect a determined stance against Kumaraswamy. Shivakumar challenged Kumaraswamy’s reluctance to face scrutiny, suggesting it diminishes his claims of innocence. In turn, Kumaraswamy asserts that the Congress government is employing vendetta politics to damage his reputation.

The state government defends its actions as part of a broader initiative to reclaim public land, with officials actively working to clear encroachments in Ramanagaram. Dismissing the accusations of political revenge, Shivakumar assured the press in Delhi that Kumaraswamy had nothing to fear if he had acted lawfully.

“If Kumaraswamy insists he hasn’t encroached or stolen, there should be documents to support that. What does this have to do with Siddaramaiah or Kumaraswamy?” he queried.

This initiative follows court orders stemming from a public interest litigation (PIL) that rebuked officials for inaction. The deputy chief minister stated that the land was surveyed as mandated by the court.

“Kumaraswamy has made many allegations against me, including claims that I stole granite. He has scrutinized my family. If he has done nothing wrong, his land will remain his; otherwise, it will be forfeited,” Shivakumar concluded.
