Reliance Launches Sun Crush in India, Sparking Price War

Published

on

Reliance Consumer Products (RCPL), owned by Mukesh Ambani, has officially announced its acquisition of the India rights for the premium juice brand Sun Crush, sourced from Muttiah Muralitharan’s Ceylon Beverage International. The company will commence local production of the juice, entering the competitive Indian retail juice market, where it will rival established brands such as Dabur’s Real, ITC’s B Natural, Amul Tru, Paperboat, and PepsiCo’s Tropicana.

To ensure a strong market presence, Reliance is adopting a pricing strategy akin to its successful approaches in the soft drinks and energy drink segments, launching Sun Crush at Rs 20 for a 200 ml bottle. This strategic move is expected to escalate competition in the packaged beverage market, where brands like Real and Tropicana already offer similar priced juice alternatives.

Sun Crush represents Reliance’s second foray into the juice sector, following the acquisition of RasKik. According to a leading FMCG distributor, in addition to competing with giants like Dabur and ITC, Tata Consumer is also exploring new, competitively priced packaged juice options.

Reliance ventured into the juice market two years ago with the purchase of RasKik from Vikas Chawla, the former managing director of Coca-Cola Southeast Europe. Beyond juice, the company has an ongoing partnership with Ceylon Beverages for contract packaging of Campa and the co-creation of the energy drink Spinn India, along with distribution rights for both energy drinks and juices throughout India.

The current valuation of India’s beverage market stands at Rs 67,000 crore, with projections indicating it could soar to Rs 1.47 trillion by 2030. This figure encompasses a diverse range of products, including carbonated drinks, juices, fruit-based beverages, and bottled water, as reported by the think tank ICRIER.

Dinesh Taluja, Chief Financial Officer of Reliance Retail Ventures, stated that the company’s FMCG operations—which include Lotus Chocolates, Maliban biscuits, and personal care products under the Independence and Good Life labels—aim to reach one million retail outlets by FY25.
