Ranji Trophy: J&K Seeks to Continue Stellar Performance Against Kerala; Saurashtra Looks to Leverage Experience to Beat Gujarat in Quarterfinals

The Ranji Trophy 2024-25 is nearing its climax, with the quarterfinals scheduled to commence this Saturday. After several weeks of fierce competition in the group stage, only eight teams are left in the hunt for the coveted title.
The knockout phase has already seen some surprising adjustments, as the J&K vs Kerala match has been moved from Jammu due to unfavorable ground conditions, and the Haryana vs Mumbai game has been relocated from Lahli to Kolkata without any official reasoning from the BCCI.

Jammu & Kashmir vs Kerala
—
Jammu & Kashmir has emerged as a surprising contender in the tournament, topping Elite Group A with five victories out of seven matches, including an impressive win against the 42-time champions, Mumbai. Their pace attack, featuring Auqib Nabi, Yudhvir Singh, and Umar Nazir, has been formidable, with Nabi leading the tournament’s wicket-taking charts at this stage. Additionally, Shubham Khajuria has been in spectacular form with the bat, amassing 663 runs at an average of 55.25, including a highest score of 255.
Kerala finished second in Elite Group C, narrowly behind Haryana. Salman Nizar has been a key player in their batting lineup, while the seasoned Jalaj Saxena has taken 33 wickets at a remarkable average of 14.81. With the neutral venue in Alur, both teams will be eager to showcase their skills in unfamiliar conditions.
Vidarbha vs Tamil Nadu
Vidarbha has established itself as a dominant force in the tournament, amassing 40 points in the group stage and finishing five points ahead of their nearest rival. Their record of six wins from seven matches underscores their superiority. Key batters Yash Rathod and Akshay Wadkar have made significant contributions, while Harsh Dubey has emerged as the tournament’s leading wicket-taker with 55 wickets at an average of 14.50.
Tamil Nadu had a more challenging path to the quarterfinals, relying on the bonus points system to advance past Chandigarh, despite winning the same number of matches as the group leaders, Saurashtra. However, their batting depth, featuring N Jagadeesan, C Andre Siddarth, and Vijay Shankar—all averaging over 60—could present a significant challenge. The clash between Vidarbha’s relentless bowling attack and Tamil Nadu’s formidable batting lineup is anticipated to be a highlight of the quarterfinals.
Haryana vs Mumbai
Haryana has remained consistent throughout this year’s Ranji Trophy, topping Elite Group C with 29 points, thanks to three wins and four draws. However, their match against Mumbai—the most successful team in Ranji Trophy history—will be a true test of their capabilities. Himanshu Rana and Anshul Kamboj have spearheaded Haryana’s efforts, with Kamboj claiming 29 wickets at an astounding average of 11.75.
Mumbai, on the other hand, narrowly qualified for the knockouts following a resounding victory over Meghalaya by an innings and 456 runs. Siddhesh Lad has enjoyed an exceptional season, averaging 86.33, while Shardul Thakur’s all-round skills make him a player to keep an eye on. The relocation from Lahli to Kolkata may influence the dynamics of this matchup, particularly with spin expected to play a more significant role.
Saurashtra vs Gujarat
The 2019-20 champions, Saurashtra, topped Elite Group D in a closely contested finish, outperforming Tamil Nadu and Chandigarh. Harvik Desai and Chirag Jani have been the standout performers with the bat, while Dharmendrasinh Jadeja leads the bowling attack with 35 wickets to his name.
Gujarat, who were runners-up in the 2016-17 season, finished second in Elite Group B with four wins. Key performer Manan Hingrajia has excelled with the bat, while Siddharth Desai showcased his match-winning prowess with a remarkable nine-wicket haul in a single innings. If Cheteshwar Pujara plays for Saurashtra, it could greatly enhance their chances in what promises to be a fiercely contested quarterfinal.
All quarterfinal matches will be live-streamed on JioCinema.
Fixtures:

Vidarbha vs Tamil Nadu in Nagpur

Rudiger issues apology for throwing object at referee during Copa del Rey final

Sure! Here’s a rewritten version of the content:
—
Real Madrid defender Antonio Rudiger has issued an apology following a potentially lengthy suspension for allegedly throwing an object at the referee during the Copa del Rey final on Sunday.
In the dying moments of Real’s 3-2 defeat to Barcelona, Rudiger and his teammates reacted with frustration over a foul called against Kylian Mbappe shortly before the match concluded. Out of anger, Rudiger seemingly threw an object in the direction of referee De Burgos Bengoetxea.
—
—
“There’s no excuse for my actions last night, and I sincerely apologize. We played well in the second half, but I made a mistake just before the whistle. I apologize to the referee and to all those I disappointed,” Rudiger expressed on X.
In his post-match report to the Spanish Football Federation, referee Bengoetxea noted that Rudiger had thrown “an object that missed me,” while Bellingham received a red card for displaying an “aggressive attitude” towards the officials after the match.
The report stated: “In the 120th minute, Antonio Rudiger (22) was sent off for throwing an object from the technical area, which missed me. After being shown a red card, he had to be restrained by coaching staff due to his aggressive demeanor.
“In the 120th minute, Lucas Vazquez Iglesias (17) was sent off for protesting one of our decisions and entering the field while making gestures of disagreement.”
“In the 999th minute, Jude Victor William Bellingham (5) was sent off for approaching us in an aggressive manner after the match, requiring restraint from his teammates.”
During a press conference, when asked about Rudiger’s substitution, Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti explained that fatigue was the reason for the decision.
“He had an outstanding performance and played as long as he could. His effort was commendable; he wasn’t injured, just exhausted and unable to continue,” Ancelotti stated.

Karna Kadur and Musa Sherif Claim APRC and INRC Titles for a Remarkable Double Victory

After a three-year hiatus, Bengaluru’s reigning National champion Karna Kadur from Arka Motorsports clinched a round of the FIA-Asia Pacific Rally Championship 2025 at the Madras International Circuit on Sunday.
It was an impressive performance in the Volkswagen Polo by the 36-year-old Kadur, who received significant support from his veteran co-driver Musa Sherif from Kasargod. Together, they also secured victory in the first round of the FMSCI Indian National Championship 2025, powered by Vamcy Merla, and organized by the Madras Motor Sports Club.
—
Finishing in second place at the APRC was Kadur’s teammate, former National champion Amittrajit Ghosh, based in England, with co-driver Ashwin Naik from Mangaluru. Delhi’s Harkrishan Wadia (co-driver Harish KN, Bengaluru) rounded out the APRC podium after Philippos Matthai (Harish KN) retired due to a mechanical issue just five kilometers from the last Special Stage.
—
Wadia, who performed exceptionally well, managed to recover from a two-minute penalty imposed for early check-in at Start Time Control, ultimately winning the Junior APRC (ages 28 and younger) category. He finished ahead of overnight leader Arnav Pratap Singh (Rohit N) and Abhin Rai (Moideen Jasheer KM).
Kadur credited his success to a careful balance of caution and aggression. “It was a smooth run for the first time in a while. The car was fantastic, and everything came together perfectly. We had a well-thought-out strategy that worked seamlessly. Although we could have pushed harder, we had to be cautious due to rising temperatures. I noticed other competitors struggling, so I made sure to hold back for when I really needed to accelerate. Overall, it’s a great start to the season, and Musa’s guidance was invaluable,” he said.
Despite challenges with his VW Polo, which was assembled just days before the event after his Mahindra XUV 300 failed during testing, Ghosh managed to perform admirably. “We faced several issues throughout the weekend, including losing the clutch today, which hindered our speed. Given we only had a few days to get this Polo ready, we did quite well.”
Wadia was pleasantly surprised to finish third in the APRC and lead the INRC2 category. “The two-minute penalty significantly affected my time, even though my pace was strong over the two days. Luckily, I gained over 50 seconds on my competitors today due to Philippos’s retirement.”
Another standout performance came from Bengaluru’s Tarushi Vikram (Vybhav Mukund Rao), who triumphed in the Women INRC category, showcasing impressive speed and control.
