Ranjeet expresses frustration, asks Rekha to return signing amount due to her antics.

Veteran actress Rekha has graced Bollywood with some of its most memorable films. Known for her captivating charm, elegance, and exceptional acting skills, she has consistently dominated the screen. During her illustrious career, she earned a reputation as one of the highest-paid and most sought-after actresses in the industry. In a recent conversation, actor-turned-filmmaker Ranjeet shared his experiences working with the iconic star on a project, revealing that he ultimately had to request the return of her signing amount due to her demands.

In an interview with Vickey Lalwani, Ranjeet spoke about his brief experience with Rekha, stating, “I had taken nearly a decade off from acting. Frustration overcame me, and when I started directing, I felt it was essential to pay actors regardless of our personal relationships. Though many hesitated to accept my payment, I insisted they accept what was due. I communicated to Rekha that, as a friend, I still wanted her to quote a fee for the film, and to my surprise, she did. Later, I discovered that another producer had signed her for a film at a rate Rs 5 lakh less than what she charged me.”

However, that was just the beginning. Ranjeet commented on Rekha’s tendency to make producers wait. “I was aware that she would have producers lining up outside her residence, and she wouldn’t grant them an audience. During my story narration, I had my entire team waiting outside, yet she refused to let them in. When I brought it up, she insisted, ‘Let them wait outside.’ Only Farzana was allowed to fetch messages and relay them to her; she avoided meeting anyone.”

After signing the film, Rekha disclosed she wouldn’t shoot during evening hours. “She was committed to another film at the time and suggested we do a day-for-night shoot. I firmly told her that I was making this film for my vision, not hers. I grew concerned that she might start treating me like other producers, so before that could happen, I politely asked her to return the signing amount. I said, ‘Rekha, please give me back my money. I can’t proceed with you on this project.’ It was all very amicable,” he explained.

Ranjeet noted that her behavior was partly influenced by her tumultuous relationship with veteran star Amitabh Bachchan. “She and Amitabh weren’t on good terms at the time, although they later reconciled. She preferred to stay in Mumbai while I wanted to shoot at my farm outside the city. She expressed a desire to return home in the evenings, but my schedule involved evening shoots. She insisted, ‘Let’s do this during the day; I want to go home at night.’” He added, “She had also expressed discomfort with the choreographer, which we adjusted as well. There were quite a few demands.”
