Rana Daggubati on Work Culture in the Industry Post Deepika-Vanga Controversy: “No One is Compelled”
Reports suggest that Deepika exited from ‘Spirit’, an upcoming film directed by Sandeep Reddy Vanga, due to unmet demands that included an 8-hour work day, a share of the profits, a substantial salary, and the refusal to deliver dialogues in Telugu.
Voices from the film community have since weighed in. Following comments from Ajay Devgn, Kajol, Saif Ali Khan, and Mani Ratnam, Rana Daggubati has offered his perspective during a candid interview with ‘The Lallantop’.
He emphasized the broader context, stating, “We must recognize that India is a developing nation. Our economy ranks 186th in terms of per capita income. In a country with 1.8 billion people, where 70-80% earn around ₹100 a day, we have to consider the larger picture.”
Rana highlighted that working conditions in the Indian film sector are not standardized. “In Maharashtra, shifts last 12 hours, while in the Telugu industry it’s 8 hours, albeit starting early at around 7 am. Conditions vary based on location and studio,” he elaborated.
He addressed the heart of the controversy regarding actor demands and the pressures tied to fame: “No one is being forced; it’s a job. Similar to how no one compels you to participate in a specific show—it’s always a choice. Some actors opt to work only four hours a day, according to their own priorities.”
With Deepika stepping away from ‘Spirit’, rising star Triptii Dimri has reportedly been cast in the lead role. Meanwhile, Deepika is now focusing on another high-profile project, collaborating with Atlee and starring alongside Allu Arjun.
As for Rana, he is preparing for the release of ‘Rana Naidu’ Season 2, set to premiere on Netflix on June 13. The gritty action-drama has garnered a formidable fanbase, and anticipation is high for the upcoming season.
This ongoing debate raises a crucial question: how can a growing industry balance star power, equitable work practices, and the realities of the country? While opinions vary, Rana’s insights offer a thoughtful and pragmatic perspective to a conversation that shows no signs of fading.
