Ram Gopal Varma Reports to Andhra Police Regarding Controversial Posts

Noted filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma appeared before the Ongole police in Andhra Pradesh on Friday regarding a case involving derogatory posts about Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan, and their families. He complied with a police notice and met with the inquiry officer at the Ongole Rural Police Station.

Circle Inspector N. Srikanth Babu was in charge of questioning Varma, who is widely known by his initials, RGV. The allegations stem from RGV’s social media activities, where he allegedly posted altered images of Chief Minister Naidu, his son Nara Lokesh, and Deputy Chief Minister Kalyan both before and after the 2024 general elections. This prompted a complaint from Rama Lingam, a mandal-level secretary of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP), leading to an FIR being filed against RGV on November 11, 2024.

Just one day prior, filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma had announced his ambitious new project, “Syndicate,” while simultaneously facing a three-month prison sentence from a Mumbai court for a cheque bounce case.

The charges against him include sections pertaining to electronic record forgery, spreading false information, defamation, criminal conspiracy, promoting enmity, and intentional insult under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), as well as publishing obscene material in electronic form under the Information Technology Act.

Initially summoned to appear at the police station by November 19, Varma sought a week’s extension through his lawyer but failed to appear. Subsequently, the police issued a new notice under the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), instructing him to report on November 25. He again missed the appointment and sought intervention from the Andhra Pradesh High Court, which granted him bail but required him to assist in the investigation.

RGV expressed concerns over the legal actions against him, noting that multiple cases had been filed in different districts stemming from a single tweet he had posted a year earlier. He claimed he could not recall the details of the tweet, stating, “I am very active on Twitter. I have tweeted thousands of times and do not remember what I tweeted a year ago.” He asserted that he would respect the legal process while defending his right to freedom of expression.
