Lyricist and singer Priya Saraiya shared her aspirations for a transformation in Bollywood’s playback culture, advocating for singers and lyricists to receive recognition on par with actors. While she acknowledged the increasing visibility of music creators, particularly with the advent of digital platforms, she underlined the importance of continued efforts to achieve proper acknowledgment for these artists. Priya stated, “I hope singers and lyricists in the film industry receive as much recognition as the actors. There’s a shift happening, and with digital platforms, music creators are gaining more visibility than before. However, we still have a considerable journey ahead.”

Saraiya also discussed the challenges faced by regional music in gaining equal representation on international platforms. She stressed the necessity for regional artists to produce more music and actively cultivate their own fanbase. “Regional artists must consistently create new music and build their audience. With digital platforms, accessing a global audience is becoming easier, but consistency is crucial,” Priya explained.

Additionally, Priya Saraiya reflected on her journey to becoming a successful lyricist and singer, offering valuable insights for aspiring artists. When asked about any advice she wished she’d received early in her career, she offered a unique perspective, saying, “Honestly, I’m grateful I didn’t receive much advice! Each artist is distinctive and has their own way of expressing themselves. While it’s beneficial to consider suggestions, at the end of the day, you must follow your heart and embrace your unique style.”

When questioned about whether the evolving trends in Bollywood music are compromising its poetic qualities for more commercial lyrics, Saraiya acknowledged the shift toward commercialism but reassured fans that there is still a place for poetry in music. “There’s definitely a trend toward commercial lyrics, but many poetic songs continue to be created. It’s all about striking the right balance,” Priya affirmed.
